One-Sheet Wonder: Tom Whalen’s PAUL Poster. Dramatic, Inviting, Friendly
Posted by mistergroonk in Art, Artist, Movies, One Sheets on March 2, 2011
Many thanks to Tom Whalen for making Paul not look like the hideous alien thing we’ve seen in all the trailers for PAUL. Either we’re getting old and fear-monger-y or we’ve been corrupted by the Disneyfacation of alien folk.
Still can’t wait to see this movie.
Better Not Suck: SKYLINE, Aliens have Converted Dyson’s Bagless-Technology into Human-Sucking Motherships. Uh Oh.
Posted by mistergroonk in Movies, One Sheets, Trailers on November 12, 2010
Official Synopsis
After a night of partying, a group of friends are distracted when beams of light awaken everyone in Los Angeles, that then attract every person like a moth to a flame. As the night progresses, they soon discover that once exposed to the light, they vanish into thin air, caused by extraterrestrial forces that later threaten to swallow the entire human species.
What We Learned: Somebody must have put the kibosh on using scientist Stephen Hawking‘s theories on alien civilizations as a clever marketing campaign. Canon: gets the clearest pictures of what our future alien overlords want to do with us. Fast cars won’t outrun the alien apocalypse. Don’t go into the light, Clarice.
Why We’ll Watch: You may or may not have noticed, faithful reader, that there are some creative projects on which we’re not sure how the final product will play out. Sure that trailer, concept art, or plot synopsis looks good but did that goodness translate into the finished piece? We’ve surreptitiously marked such posts with the tag ‘better not suck.’
From the SKYLINE trailer we perceive three possibilities.
1) It’ll be a fun, romp and stomp us against them action piece.
2) It’s a treatise on the effects of the “limelight” on large swaths of humanity. Bear with us on this. SKYLINE’s focus is on L.A. The hometown of super stardom. The Hollywood Machine(aliens) hovers down and selects(abducts) the precious few to become part of their special collective.
3) It’ll suck.
We’re hoping it’s the first choice. The second choice we’ll leave for our thesis paper.
When’s it coming? November 12, 2010. That’s right. Today!

International Trailer for BATTLE:LOS ANGELES Awesomer than US Version, Teases with Story
Posted by mistergroonk in Movies, One Sheets, Trailers on November 12, 2010
Official Synopsis
For years, there have been documented cases of UFO sightings around the world – Buenos Aires, Seoul, France, Germany, China. But in 2011, what were once just sightings will become a terrifying reality when Earth is attacked by unknown forces. As people everywhere watch the world’s great cities fall, Los Angeles becomes the last stand for mankind in a battle no one expected. It’s up to a Marine staff sergeant (Aaron Eckhart) and his new platoon to draw a line in the sand as they take on an enemy unlike any they’ve ever encountered before.
What We Learned: Aliens have been watching/testing us for decades. They’ve judged us weak. Now they’ve come to collect whatever it is aliens want from a human infested planet.
Why We’ll Watch: We were doing our damndest to wait to talk about BATTLE:LOS ANGELES. The entire movie Internet has been chattering through our Twitters all morning about the short teaser. It was easy to ignore until Collider hit us with the international trailer provided by Omelete.
For once, the traditional approach to movie trailers wins out over some avant garde direction. This is a trailer in which we can sink our eye-teeth. There’s a quick skim of the plot. There’s actual dialogue. There’s some explanation on why Los Angeles is so damn important to become the title of the film.
Although we remain weary of any film that features L.A. as the last line of defense against our future alien overlords.*

Watch: TARTARUS. Our Alien Overlords are Here, 200 Years Earlier
Posted by mistergroonk in Movies, Trailers on October 29, 2010
Official Synopsis
…director Stefan Muller has hit on an intriguing premise for his film Tartarus. It is 1813 and a pair of soldiers returning home from the Napoleonic War are caught in the middle of something unimaginable when meteors fall from the sky carrying hostile visitors with them.
What We Learned: Did you see that bearded fellow pontificating in German by the river? Is it us or has Joss Whedon has really let himself go?
Luckily, fighting aliens is always a good workout plan.
Why We’ll Watch: It’s an alien invasion film set in 1813. That line alone piqued interest. We’ll soon see how the low budget restricted, or enhanced, the story.
When’s it coming?
November 5th. Vienna, Austria. No telling when the USA will get it.

Our Strange Sky: New Yorkers Want to Believe. Spies a UFO, Balloon.
Posted by mistergroonk in Marketing, USA, Video on October 15, 2010
New Yorkers were dazzled and amazed by a floating bit of shiny in their skies just the other day. They gazed upwards in wonder at what looked to us like a reprise of Balloon Boy. Remember him?
You see this screen cap below? We’re not even going to bother to photoshop a pointer for this.
A retired US Air Force officer prophesied the mysterious objects coming back in September 13.
Mr Fulham stated the extraterrestrials would neither land nor make any communication with Earth on Wednesday.
But their presence would be “the first in a series intended to avert a planetary catastrophe resulting from increasing levels of carbon-dioxide in the earth’s atmosphere dangerously approaching a ‘critical mass’. (…) They are aware from eons of experience with other planets in similar conditions their sudden intervention would cause fear and panic.”
He says their contact with Earth is part of their process of leading mankind into accepting the “alien reality and technologies for the removal of poisonous gases from the earth’s atmosphere in 2015, if not sooner”.
Mr Fulham, we would love for this to be a Spielbergian CLOSE ENCOUNTERS, a Roddenberryesque FIRST CONTACT, or, hell, even an ALF moment. But why would a space-faring civilization be that on-point about humanity cleaning up the atmosphere by 2015? Instead of choosing to “meet our leaders” they buzz Chelsea like a gang of college stoners looking for the only Piggly Wiggly that carries their flavor of cornettos. We won’t even mention that in a town of millions were half the citizens have futurephones or HD cameras, not a damn one of them could get a clear shot of a stationary object in broad daylight.
To say that we are skeptical would be an understatement.
Now look at what happened in China back in July.
There are streaks and flares and general military grade weirdness going on in that photo.
China is outdoing us in UFO encounters. China.
We remember a time when there wasn’t a cow left not butchered, a field left standing tall or a farm hand questioning his sexual determination after that night he once saw “fire in the sky.”
Come on America. We can do this. We can’t let China beat us to the strange-ness.
Our Strange Sky: UFO Buzzes Chinese Airport, Let the Mass Speculations Begin
Posted by mistergroonk in Video, World on July 16, 2010
Of course this happened last week(July 9). We suppose it takes this long for weirdness to escape from China.
Hangzhou, Zhejiang CHINA — An unidentified flying object forced an airport in a major Chinese city to shut down operations for an hour, various reports said.
According to state media outlet China Daily, the incident happened at Hangzhou’s Xiaoshan Airport on July 7, when the UFO was spotted around 8:30 p.m. According to the report, the object did not show up on radar.
The HuffPost says another sighting has been reported by Shanghai Daily.
A second China UFO sighting has residents on edge, just seven days after an unidentified flying object shut down a Chinese airport.
The new UFO sighting took place in Chongqing in eastern China on July 15. Witnesses said they saw the same thing: “four lantern-like objects forming a diamond shape that hovered over the city’s Shaping Park for over an hour.”
Like the one before it, there has been no official explanation to date for this latest incident.
Curious that the turnaround on this sighting was so short.
We’ve found videos on the July 9 incident and placed them under the cut.

Stephen Hawking Believes in Alien Planet Jackers, More Doomy Dooms of Doom
Posted by mistergroonk in Science, World on April 28, 2010
We find it curious that when scientist Albert Harrison says a visiting alien race may be as petty as humans back in January 2010, no one bats an eyelash.
Stephen Hawking says the same thing and accompanies the statement with ILM level visual effects and time on the Discovery Channel, everyone won’t shut up about humanity’s doom.

Scientist Thinks Aliens will Be as Petty as Humans, Head for the Hills!
Posted by mistergroonk in Science, The Future on January 26, 2010
Basing his ideas on Darwinian evolution, scientist Albert Harrison believes some aliens that visit us might be more of the ID4/SIGNS we-come-for-your-stuff variety instead of the E.T./STARMAN we-just-want-to-know-you flavor. Harrison also believes that the radio signals we’ve been unintentionally blasting into space is not the best example of humanity that aliens should be receiving. We can’t argue with him on that point.
He has no thoughts on why the conquering-aliens movies we’ve mentioned suck more than the friendly alien comparisons we’ve provided.
Some enthusiasts believe any alien civilisation capable of reaching us can only have survived long enough to develop the necessary technology by solving major social problems, such as war, poverty and discrimination. Harrison disagrees.
“I do think there’s a risk in active searches for extra-terrestrials. The attitude seems to be they’re friendly, they’re a long way away, and they can’t get here. But if you wake up one morning and an armada of extra-terrestrial spaceships are circling Earth, that prediction won’t necessarily hold,” Harrison said.
If life has evolved elsewhere in our cosmic neighbourhood, we should find out by detecting their waste gases in the atmosphere of their planet or by discovering remnants of extra-terrestrial microbes in meteorites or alien soil samples, he said.
[…]
His research suggests not, but he believes Christians should clarify whether God’s creation covers the whole of space or just Earth.
That’s right. He gave you notes on the Bible. That Happened. And it’s not a bad idea.
Exolanguage: do you speak alien?
In related news, are you ready to speak with the coming alien overlords?
So where might we find some common ground with ET? Perhaps in mathematics. This idea goes back about three centuries, when it was suggested that we could hail beings on the moon by cutting a diagram of Pythagoras’s theorem into the forests of Siberia.
In 1960, Dutch mathematician Hans Freudenthal proposed an interspecies language called Lincos that starts with simple mathematical statements – a series of beeps to represent 1 + 1 = 2 for example. It then uses these to define logical relationships, eventually building up to more complex concepts of time and space.
But how do you convey human ideas like, ‘Please don’t eat us?‘ or ‘You can have that lovely island of Australia if you leave the rest of us be?’
It seems mixing images with math may save us.
And we can do better than “cows go moo”. Paolo Musso, a philosopher at the Pontifical Urbaniana University in Rome, Italy, has outlined one way to combine mathematics and images to tell a moral tale using the process of analogy. First, arithmetic is used to establish signals that mean right and wrong, defined by sums that are right and wrong. These can then be applied to cartoons showing what we consider to be good and bad actions.
Comics will save us…
“My conclusion is that you would just send them the Google servers. That’s an enormous amount of information, much of it redundant and pictographic. Much of it is pornographic too, but I expect they could handle that.”
… or porn.
