“We’ve Been Studying the Elephant’s Tail,” an Animated Comic Explains the Basics of Dark Matter
Posted by mistergroonk in Comics, Science on December 13, 2011
Did you ever think that you needed a layperson’s explanation on what is dark matter? We have. On many occasions. It’s strange but the more we read about it, the more it confounds and fascinates us. No wonder scientists are obsessed over it. PHD Comics broke down the basics of dark matter and drew it up comics style.
Comics save the world again.
BTW, in other universal news, we know CERN‘s announcement on whether we’ve found the Higgs Boson particle is coming later today. Keep an eye on our Twitter feed(look right) or G+ for an immediate reaction. A thought out response should be appearing around these parts later on.

Moment of Who: Kevin, the Robot Dinosaur Companion. Thank You, Comics.
Posted by mistergroonk in Comics, Robots on November 14, 2011
Kevin is a robot dinosaur that traveled with The Doctor in the TARDIS. A few months ago, we learned, via Reddit, that this has been going on in the pages of the 11th Doctor‘s comics series.
WHY HAS NO ONE TOLD US THIS AWESOME HAS BEEN GOING ON!?
Webcomics Love: John Porcellino’s King-Cat Comics, “Diogenes of Cinope”
Posted by mistergroonk in Artist, Comics, Panel Perfect on February 9, 2011
From the archives of What Things Do we pulled John Porcellino‘s comic on Diognes of Cinope. Diognes was the only pupil of Antisthenes, a source of Plato’s humiliation, and he openly mocked Alexander the Great. He was also a founder of Cynicism and he once walked the town in the daytime carrying a lamp looking for a human being.
We can’t say if he ever found one.
Now Diognes has been immortalized in a webcomic.

Tumblr Watch: A Moment of Ellis
Posted by mistergroonk in Comics, Panel Perfect on January 6, 2011
It seems there’s some kind of bug in the air. Now there’s A Moment of Ellis chronicling the bibliographic adventures of one Mr Warren Ellis. It, too, promises a day by day examination of the works of its selected British comics writer. We’ll see if this promise holds as the days wear on.
Warren Ellis is the English writer/futurologist that has penned the likes of Transmetropolitan, Nextwave, Gravel, The Authority, Astonishing X-Men, Planetary, Global Frequency, Anna Mercury, FreakAngels, and Ocean to name but a few. A very small few. Have a look at his bibliography why don’t ya?

Tumblr Watch: A Moment of Morrison
Posted by mistergroonk in Comics, Panel Perfect on January 6, 2011
Not long after A Moment of Moore graced the Internet a like minded individual took the next step.
That step was A Moment of Morrison. It aims to follow the same regimen as its predecessor. A daily dose of the works of Grant Morrison. We could list his successful run on choice titles from our favorite chaos magician (Animal Man, Doom Patrol, JLA, The Invisibles, New X-Men, Fantastic Four, All Star Superman, and Batman).
But why don’t you just experience his ideas one day at a time.

Tumblr Watch: A Moment of Moore
Posted by mistergroonk in Comics, Just Freaking Neat, Panel Perfect on January 6, 2011
We are told it began with Alan Moore. Yes, the man that gave us MiracleMan, redefined Swamp Thing, deconstructed the superhero in the comics mini-series Watchmen and has several of his movies misinterpreted by the Hollywood machine(not counting WATCHMEN, which we rather liked, or V FOR VENDETTA which was okay for what it was).
He’s become the latest in a line of Tumblr memes. A Moment of Moore makes the claim to post something related to Alan Moore every day. We’re gonna hold you to this, mysterious blog poster. If there’s not a daily bit of Moore-esque ideas there will be hell to pay. And by hell we mean “summon an Old One from the pit of slithering” kind of hell.

Tumblr Watch: NanoGraphicMo, Create a Graphic Novel in a Month. Starts November 1st.
Posted by mistergroonk in Comics on October 28, 2010
NanoWriMo is the popular new tradition of writing a novel within a month. That month being November.
NanoGraphicMo is the slightly newer tradition(we hope) of creating a graphic novel within the month of November. We learned of this one a bit late in the game. We didn’t feel it was right to rope an artist into non-paying work, no matter how beneficial, at the last minute. It was that and the fact we don’t have a 48 page story worked out just yet.
We have to say there is more than one way to skin a cat.
November 1st – 30th just got a little more creative.
The NanoGraphicMo starts November the 1st and ends at 12 am November the 30th.
The goal: to finish a black and white, 48 page graphic novel with cover in just under a month.

WATCH: David McCandless Talk the Beauty of Data Visualization. “Data is the New Soil”
Posted by mistergroonk in Art, Comics, Intertube Madness, Just Freaking Neat, Marketing on September 17, 2010
Here we present to you a delightful TED talk featuring journalist/programmer Davd McCandless.
When David McCandless began speaking of combing the language of the eye with the language of the mind the obvious connection came to us.
“It’s two languages working together at the same time.”
This is something comics readers have known forever. It’s no accident that data visualization works as a simple, yet complex, way to get useful information across efficiently.
Below the jump, some info-graphics featured in the TED Talk that stirred our curiosity.
Look. Down in the Basement. It’s a Rat? It’s a Mole? It’s Superman Saving Your House from Foreclosure
Posted by mistergroonk in Comics, Just Freaking Neat, USA on August 6, 2010
Times remain tough. This fact is very clear. Times were even tougher for an anonymous family in the South. The second mortgage on their house was bearing down hard.
Who would think a choice find of “Action Comics #1” in the basement, featuring the first appearance of Superman, would be their red-caped angel?
The family, which lives in the South and wishes to remain anonymous, contacted Metropolis Comics and Collectibles in New York. According to a report on ABC News, their copy of Action #1, which graded out at a #5 VG (Very Good/Fine), is expected to bring upwards of $250,000 at auction.
The family, which had inherited the home when the wife’s father died and had lived in it for years, was able to keep the house when representatives from Metropolis Comics were able to convince bank officials of the worth of the comic, which will be up for auction on ComicConnect.com from August 27th through September 17th.
This ABC News story has the full rundown.

Cartoonist Daryl Cagle Collects ‘Oil Spill Cartoons’ into iPhone/iPod Touch App
Posted by mistergroonk in Apps, Comics, Marketing, Technology on June 16, 2010
We’re not familiar with MSNBC cartoonist, Daryl Cagle’s work. What he’s done here is of interest to us. Centering an app around a theme in his work that just so happens to match current events is pretty nifty. Hell, it’s so obvious we wonder why it hasn’t occurred to us before.
The level of advertising Cagle is running for his new ‘Oil Spill Cartoon’ app, however, slams hard against the spam line. If he wasn’t advertising so hard, we never would have noticed them. Now that we notice them, and him, we can’t help but see his pleas for your $0.99.
Marketing and sales is a delicate dance between you and potential costumers. It’s never a good idea to slam hard on your partner’s toes.
