Interview: “Warren Ellis Thinks Newt Gingrich’s Space Ideas Are Full of Shit”

Over on Motherboard , Abraham Reisman interviewed Warren Ellis about Newt Gingrich’s aspirations for a USA moon colony. We figured Mr Ellis might have a word or two on Gingrich’s obvious vote grabbing statement. Mr Ellis did not disappoint.

The following excerpts are just a few choice moments from the interview. It was a bit difficult deciding which thoughts were best.

Abraham Reisman: What kind of merit is there to Gingrich’s proposals — which he’s self-described as “grandiose” — for developing a rocket that can reach Mars, establishing a permanent moon base, and so on?

Warren Ellis: Well, let’s start with the “51st State” bit that’s being bandied about. Speaker Gingrich knows as well as the next political mammal that the Outer Space Treaty forbids any one nation from claiming sovereignty over the moon. So, not so much with the 51st State crap.

[…]

Going to Mars is important. Going back to the Moon is, I think, important. But his plans and reasons for going make about as much sense as if he had said we had to go to Mars to find him something new to marry. I’m genuinely interested in seeing the human race escape the planet and go exploring. Speaker Gingrich would like to be elected.

Are there other technological goals on the scale of space travel that you think humanity should be pushing for, right now? If so, do you see models for us achieving them?

I’m not sure where everyone got the idea that the human race can only do one thing at a time. “What about here on Earth?” people say. “Shouldn’t there be other goals here that we should be pushing for?” Sure there are. But at this late date I’m fairly sure we’ve mastered walking and chewing gum as a simultaneous operation.

I’m not suggesting that we can’t do two things at once. But if there were things in addition to space travel that you think could have a similarly massive effect on humanity’s ability to grow as a species…

Curing cancer. Increasing quality human longevity. Induced pluripotential cell treatments. Nailing down that weird neutrino anomaly that seems to allow for faster-than-light communication. The usual shopping list. Also I want an orbital death ray.

On WhiteChapel: FANTASTIC FOUR #1 Goes Under the Remake/Remodel Microscope

Earlier this week, the Chinese Whispers Uchronal Cover remodel began anew. This time the focus was on Remaking/Remodeling FANTASTIC FOUR #1. The following were the guiding instructions:

You are an artist/designer. You have to put together the cover for a comic called THE FANTASTIC FOUR. It is issue 1 of this book.

You have been told that the comic is about four people who steal a spaceship, fly into space, get heavily irradiated by cosmic rays, and return to earth weirdly altered by their experience.

And that’s it. The bastards haven’t told you one more damn thing than that. Not a clue. They might all be women. It might be about the Indian space programme twenty years from now. For all you know this is a JG Ballard story, for christ’s sake…

It’s up to you what kind of company you’re at. What kind of comics you make. How you translate that description of The Fantastic Four. What era you’re in. Who you are, even. Go nuts with it.

So far we love Chris Graves entry. It may not be as mental as Chip Zardsky’s(hidden deep below the cut) but it remains comics style fantastic.

CHINESE WHISPERS UCHRONAL COVER REMODEL: Fantastic Four #1

We dropped a handful of other favorites(and that Zardsky submission) under the cut. View all the art wonderfulness at Whitechapel.

Kickstarter Comics Watch: The Charity TRANSMETROPOLITAN Art Book

Someone has decided the world needs a new dose of Transmetropolitan art and sensibility. They are not wrong.

It has been nearly ten years since the release of the final issue of TRANSMETROPOLITAN, the Eisner-nominated comics series from writer Warren Ellis and artist Darick Robertson. We have approached Mr Ellis and Mr Robertson about putting together a brand new art book of original images, and we’re happy to report both of the co-creators will be participating in this project, donating a brand new cover and a foreword for the book!

TRANSMETROPOLITAN combines black humor, political scandal, and moral ambiguity to look into the gonzo mind of an outlaw journalist and The City he inhabits. Aided by his embattled Editor and his two Assistants, the protagonist blazes a path through a futuristic world of skyscrapers and technological wonders, dark alleys and unspeakable depravity.

If you’re unsure as to what Transmet is why not read the first issue for free courtesy of DC Comics.

Why should you fund this project?

Our goal is to raise $100,000 to be donated* to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund and the Hero Initiative.

The CBLDF helps creators fight against artistic censorship. The Hero Initiative “is the first federally recognized not-for-profit organization dedicated to helping comic book creators, writers and artists in need.”

As of this posting, there are 17 days left to fund this project and roughly $6000 to go before they meet their Kickstarter goal.

The tag below will keep you current on the project.

Tumblr Watch: A Moment of Ellis

It seems there’s some kind of bug in the air. Now there’s A Moment of Ellis chronicling the bibliographic adventures of one Mr Warren Ellis. It, too, promises a day by day examination of the works of its selected British comics writer. We’ll see if this promise holds as the days wear on.

Warren Ellis is the English writer/futurologist that has penned the likes of Transmetropolitan, Nextwave, Gravel, The Authority, Astonishing X-Men, Planetary, Global Frequency, Anna Mercury, FreakAngels, and Ocean to name but a few. A very small few. Have a look at his bibliography why don’t ya?

READ: Warren Ellis Chats Up Internet about RED, Begs for Your Filthy Money

The Warren Ellis/Cully Hammer comic, RED, has been on our minds ever since the trailer dazzled the Internets with Helen Mirren operating automatic weapons with extreme prejudice.

What lay below are very short blurbs from the column pieces that Eliis wrote for MTV Splashpage promoting RED. Clink the column titles to discover the entire articles. And if you enjoy a good laugh.

Day 1: Where It Started: Guest Editor Warren Ellis Explains The Origin Of ‘Red’

There’s an old story that’s been doing the conspiracy-theorist rounds since God was a boy, and it goes like this…

Day 2: Warren Ellis On His ‘Red’ Set Visit: Frozen Hipsters, Throat-Punches, And Carrot Sticks

Cully got to visit the set in warm and wonderful New Orleans. They liked Cully. Cully’s a clever artist what draws the pretty pictures. Me? I got sent to Toronto in the middle of their worst winter in years. They were building shelters for the homeless out of frozen hipsters on Yonge Street…

Day 3: ADAPT THIS: Guest Editor Warren Ellis Reveals The Comic Book Adaptations He’d Like to See!

….”Gone With The Wind” with Jason Statham playing all the roles and nut-punching alien coke-rhinos from beyond space in the laser-scorched plantation fields of Georgia…

Day 4: Warren Ellis’ Most-Anticipated ‘Red’ Scenes: Office Brawls, F-Bombs, And Ernest Borgnine

I like to think that Karl Urban was back at the hotel with a drink, smiling at the very idea of having to spend several hours smashing Bruce Willis into a desk when there was clearly someone else available to do it for him.

Day5: Which Comics To Read After ‘Red’? Warren Ellis Has Some Recommendations!

Would you like some graphic novels that are, like “Red,” all about spies, liars, guns and things exploding? ‘Course you bloody would. Let me give you a few suggestions.

Or you could buy all my books and just pretend they were about spies and sh*t and GET YOUR HANDS OFF MY BLOODY COMPUTER I’LL SAY WHAT I BLOODY WELL LIKE NO STOP!!!

He really did offer some good comics that you should read. We just thought that last quote was funny.

The Calm Before the Release: On The Approach Of RED

The RED movie experience has been fun. I got to meet some really interesting, really nice people. I got told great stories. I got to go to some interesting places, and the experience of doing the San Diego con from the VIP side was actually fascinating in a perverse way.

RED starts October 15th people. We swear to all the unholy gods that came before and are yet to be born that if you make JACKASS 3-D the top grossing movie this weekend, we will drive to your houses to kick each and every one of you square in the face.

On WhiteChapel: Wonder Woman’s Character is Remade/ReModeled

What is it about this amazon that brings out the art in people?

All this week and part of next is another Wonder Woman makeover. Instead of giving her new couture, Mr Ellis bid his artful followers to re-imagine the character from the ground up.

We hated reducing MrSmite‘s ode to Heinlein with this Starship Trooper Wonder Woman. You owe it to yourselves to view the piece in its embiggened glory.
