Tuesday Tease: IRON MAN 3 Trailer Debuts on Internet, Marvel Geeks Won’t Get Anything Done Today
Posted by mistergroonk in Movies, One Sheets, Trailers on October 23, 2012
Official Synopsis: Unknown at the moment. We did see The Mandarin wearing his 10 stylish rings so we’re guessing that plot is on.
What We Learned: A bad, bad thing happened in Marvel Cinematic Universe New York City and Iron Man feels he’s to blame. You know, Marvel Cinematic Universe is a lot to type when talking about this new shared universe Marvel studios has managed to assemble. The Marvel comics multiverse is vast and ever expanding. The primary comics universe is considered to be Earth-616. We’re taking it upon ourselves to name this new shared Marvel Cinematic Universe ‘Earth-Awesome.’ Now that that’s settled, back to the trailer review. We’re guessing this bad, bad thing has nothing to do with the never ending horde of aliens riding leviathans that tried to take over Earth-Awesome(it’s growing on you) in the spring of 2012.
Tony Stark has insomnia/night terrors. This is understandable since his spare suits get “BLOWED UP!”, his house attacked from the sky and, of course, that mysterious thing that happens in NYC.
Ben Kingsley is The Mandarin and is doing his best to not sound Chinese at all. Which is odd since Earth-616 Mandarin takes a certain pride in his culture.
Why hello there Iron Patriot who could not possibly be Norman Osborne since movie SPIDER-MAN, and his characters, are still owned by Sony Pictures Entertainment.
Why We’ll Watch: The trailer alone looks 5 times better than IRON MAN 2 turned out to be. Shane Black makes his directorial debut into the Earth-Awesome universe. Mr Black, if you don’t know, directed KISS KISS BANG BANG. And if you haven’t seen this film you stop reading this article right now. Rent it. Put it in your brain. Then try to tell us Black wasn’t a damn fine choice to do the third Iron Man. BTW Black’s screenwriting credits include the original LETHAL WEAPON, THE MONSTER SQUAD and THE LONG KISS GOODNIGHT.
When’s it coming? Despite what the above trailer says, every other place we found says IRON MAN 3 will drop on May 2013.

Tuesday Tease: The New MAD MEN Season 5 Promo Poster is In, Don Draper Ogles a Naked Mannequin
Posted by mistergroonk in Marketing, One Sheets, Television on February 28, 2012
The Mad Men minimalist teaser poster made the rounds mid January 2012.
Now we have this “nonverbal representation” to whet our appetites until Mad Men returns to our collective TVs. Series creator Matthew Weiner had this to say about the image in the New York Times.
“This is a dreamlike image,†Mr. Weiner said, likening it to work of the Italian artist Giorgio de Chirico, who specialized in surreal, mannequin-like figures.
The image is “a nonverbal representation of where my head is at and where the show will be,†Mr. Weiner said.
“By the end of the season,†he said, “I guarantee you’ll know what it is about.â€
A “nonverbal representation” eh? We see the glorious previous 4 seasons of Mad Men, a show about high-powered, fast tallking advertising executives in 1960s New York City, was not a fluke.

Saturday Afternoon Theater: BRINGING GODZILLA DOWN TO SIZE: The Art of Japanese Special Effects
Posted by mistergroonk in Documentary, Movies, One Sheets, Only in Japan on December 31, 2011

By chance we scanned a tweet from @wildgrounds sharing a link to the documentary BRINGING GODZILLA DOWN TO SIZE: The Art of Japanese Special Effects(2008). This is a documentary interviewing the actors, special effects artists, directors and the like about the insane popularity of the Godzilla franchise and why, after all these years, the king of all monsters who still stomps about Tokyo the the 21st century remains a man in a rubber suit.
Watch the documentary below the cut.

Moment of…Fright: David Tennant Finally gets some Recognition for Being in FRIGHT NIGHT
Posted by mistergroonk in Movies, One Sheets on July 6, 2011
This re-make of the classic 1980s FRIGHT NIGHT character poster makes it into the Moment of Who files by the shear audacity of David Tennant(known to this generation of Whovians as the 10th Doctor) dresssed like a fan cosplay mashup gone terribly goth.
Don’t get us wrong. The main reason we’re watching this movie is to support David Tennant breaking into Hollywood and getting more big screen roles. We’re fine with this movie’s updated sense using Tennant to jack douchebag Cris Angel’s swagger. The rest of the poster, however, gives us pause.
But this tag line: “He’s raising the stakes.” Are you serious with that? And either he has a serious blood-in-urine problem or someone needs to dial down on using thathandy blood splatter tutorial they found on Internet.
All snark aside, you canv iew the rest of the character posters over on Geeks of Doom.

Tuesday Tease: First 14 Minutes of Games of Thrones
Posted by mistergroonk in One Sheets, Television on April 5, 2011
Official Synopsis
Kings, queens, knights and renegades use schemes and swords to battle for the throne.
What We Learned:
There’s something not right in the woods near The Wall. The laws in Winterfell are unbending. Sean Bean remains epic.
Why We’ll Watch:
Let’s get this out there now. We know very little of the George R. R. Martin series of books this HBO series has adapted. Many of our friends have said fine things about the fantasy novels. We just haven’t made the time to get into them. The HBO series was a passing curiosity at most. Now that we’ve seen the 14 minute teaser, our interest in the series has risen considerably.
When’s it coming?
April 17, 2011 on HBO.

One-Sheet Wonder: Tom Whalen’s PAUL Poster. Dramatic, Inviting, Friendly
Posted by mistergroonk in Art, Artist, Movies, One Sheets on March 2, 2011

Many thanks to Tom Whalen for making Paul not look like the hideous alien thing we’ve seen in all the trailers for PAUL. Either we’re getting old and fear-monger-y or we’ve been corrupted by the Disneyfacation of alien folk.
Still can’t wait to see this movie.
