Giant-Sized Geek and Giant-Sized Marvel, Comics Blog for Comics Addicts
Posted by mistergroonk in Art, Comics on January 26, 2012
What Is It?: Two blogs submitted for your approval. Both dedicated to the curiosities and artful epicness of comics. A favorite from Giant-Size Marvel is Bruce Timm drawing the Women of Marvel(seen above). While Giant-Size Geek has been flooding our brains with Jack Kirby Fourth World Galleries and 1970s Conan portfolios.
Back to the Timm drawing, we always thought Marvel animation’s biggest failing was not having a consistent style in the beginning. The elegant simplicity of his work always drew us into the DCAU* in the ’90s.

Tumblr Watch: Dwain Smith’s Googly Eyes X-Men Comic Covers Makes Mutant Angst Fun Again
Posted by mistergroonk in Comics, LOL on December 28, 2011
What is it: File this under: yet another simple idea so awesome that we should have thought of it first. Dwain Smith‘s pasting of googly eyes on X-Men covers is nerd comedy we can get behind. We don’t understand why but the more serious the X-Men cover, the better the eye googlies makes it. He’ll never run out of usable material from the Dork Age.

Tumblr Watch: Awesome People Hanging Out Together
Posted by mistergroonk in Just Freaking Neat, Photography on July 29, 2011
What Is It?: In the photo above you have Bob Marley, Mick Jagger and Peter Tosh just hanging out. In the photo below we see Roald Dahl and Ernest Hemingway having a stroll in 1944 London.
If you haven’t noticed we’re slightly addicted to candid photographs of celebrities being regular people or hamming it up on the fly. Tabloid pics do not count.
Hopefully this new Tumblr will feed our interests for a while.

Moment of Who: Texts from the TARDIS & The Hub & The Sexy TARDIS
Posted by mistergroonk in Comics, LOL, Macro on June 8, 2011
Not one. Not two. But three. Three Doctor Who related Tumblrs. Two of them take advantage of the “Texts from ___” meme that we’ve been missing out on. Texts from Pawnee, you’re next on our Tumblr Watch list.
They also harken to fumetti or photonovels, if you will. Photonovels use stills from film or television along with narrative text or word balloons to tell a story. So yeah. Comics!
The odd lady out on this list is the Sexy TARDIS Tumblr. It takes advantage of the much loved(by us anyway) Neil Gaiman written Dr Who episode that aired this year, “The Doctor’s Wife.”
Texts from the TARDIS
What Is It?: Screen caps from all of current Doctor Who series were merged with Texts from last Night. Hilarity ensues. Sexy hilarity.

Texts from The Hub
What Is It?: Some avid TORCHWOOD fan(this remains hard for us to believe those really exist) took Texts From last Night and applied them to scans from the DOCTOR WHO spinoff TORCHWOOD for comedic effect. We gotta say this is the funnest that show has ever been. This includes all the unintentional laughs. But it does not include the “Children of Earth” miniseries which we found quite enjoyable.

Sexy TARDIS
What Is It?: As we mentioned above, Neil Gaiman wrote an episode for the 11th Doctor called “The Doctor’s Wife.” In that gem of television we learn that The Doctor calls the TARDIS sexy when they are alone. Fandom has latched on to this idea with gusto and ran with it. The SexyTARDIS- Tumblr is all about “Sexy” doing its damnedest to take you home for the night. If you know what we mean. Basically it’s inside Who jokes nerds tell themselves during that game of D&D on a Friday night.(This fits us to a ‘t’ only the games are on a Sunday night.)

Thank You, Internet: Why Did You Buy Me That?
Posted by mistergroonk in Intertube Madness, LOL on January 14, 2011
About a decade ago a friend gave us a mouse pad.
On that mouse pad was a painting of those infamous dogs playing poker.
We would feature and submit that gift to this worthwhile site but we’re not sure where exactly we buried the thing

Tumblr Watch: A Moment of Ellis
Posted by mistergroonk in Comics, Panel Perfect on January 6, 2011
It seems there’s some kind of bug in the air. Now there’s A Moment of Ellis chronicling the bibliographic adventures of one Mr Warren Ellis. It, too, promises a day by day examination of the works of its selected British comics writer. We’ll see if this promise holds as the days wear on.
Warren Ellis is the English writer/futurologist that has penned the likes of Transmetropolitan, Nextwave, Gravel, The Authority, Astonishing X-Men, Planetary, Global Frequency, Anna Mercury, FreakAngels, and Ocean to name but a few. A very small few. Have a look at his bibliography why don’t ya?

Tumblr Watch: A Moment of Morrison
Posted by mistergroonk in Comics, Panel Perfect on January 6, 2011
Not long after A Moment of Moore graced the Internet a like minded individual took the next step.
That step was A Moment of Morrison. It aims to follow the same regimen as its predecessor. A daily dose of the works of Grant Morrison. We could list his successful run on choice titles from our favorite chaos magician (Animal Man, Doom Patrol, JLA, The Invisibles, New X-Men, Fantastic Four, All Star Superman, and Batman).
But why don’t you just experience his ideas one day at a time.

Tumblr Watch: A Moment of Moore
Posted by mistergroonk in Comics, Just Freaking Neat, Panel Perfect on January 6, 2011
We are told it began with Alan Moore. Yes, the man that gave us MiracleMan, redefined Swamp Thing, deconstructed the superhero in the comics mini-series Watchmen and has several of his movies misinterpreted by the Hollywood machine(not counting WATCHMEN, which we rather liked, or V FOR VENDETTA which was okay for what it was).
He’s become the latest in a line of Tumblr memes. A Moment of Moore makes the claim to post something related to Alan Moore every day. We’re gonna hold you to this, mysterious blog poster. If there’s not a daily bit of Moore-esque ideas there will be hell to pay. And by hell we mean “summon an Old One from the pit of slithering” kind of hell.

The short story “The Price” is our second favorite Neil Gaiman short story. When Mr Scary Trousers himself blogged about Christopher Salmon’s wish to create a CG animated adaptation of this short. Well. You can guess that our interest was piqued. Then we saw Salmon’s teaser animatic and our interest shot through the damn roof!
Watch Salmon’s pitch reel and decide just how awesome this film will be for yourselves:
