Tumblr Watch: Awesome People Hanging Out Together

What Is It?: In the photo above you have Bob Marley, Mick Jagger and Peter Tosh just hanging out. In the photo below we see Roald Dahl and Ernest Hemingway having a stroll in 1944 London.

If you haven’t noticed we’re slightly addicted to candid photographs of celebrities being regular people or hamming it up on the fly. Tabloid pics do not count.

Hopefully this new Tumblr will feed our interests for a while.

The Sunday Punch: Matt Smith is Batman Now. Vengeance is cool.

The 11th Doctor, Matt Smith, as Batman?! Do go on…

the British actor was playing a comedic Batman over the weekend for an event called 24 Hour Plays (the plays are written the night before by various playwrights, then the actors have only a day of rehearsals before going live on stage) in Santa Monica, Calif.

So Mr Smith is stretching his legs and giving it the Hollywood try, eh? Good on ya, mate.

All the plays in the event are written the night before by various playwrights.

The actors then spend just one day rehearsing before performing it.

At the start of his play – called Gotham Autopsy – Smith was covered in a sheet in a mortuary before he came to life as a confused Batman. Comedian and Don’t Mess With Zohan star Nick Swardson starred as Robin. Also in his play was Kick Ass star Lyndsy Fonseca and fellow Brit Saffron Burrows. Half-way through the 20 minute skit Smith dropped his fake American accent and became a cockney to huge laughs from the audience.

This 24 Hour Plays thing sounds like a neat theater event somewhat unique to the LA scene. Where else would you see The Doctor as Batman, Eva Mendes dressed as a pumpkin or movie Fantastic Four’s Reed Richards(aka Ioan Gruffudd) on stage in a yellow polka dot bikini ?

No, really. That happened.

Thank You Internet: Patrick Stewart Knighted with a Bat’leth

In case you didn’t know. Patrick Stewart was knighted by the Queen “for reals.”

Internet added the Bat’leth afterwards (as Internet often does). The only question is, ‘how long did it take for it to happen?’

The Yorkshire-born star said he would be celebrating his knighthood with Cecil Dormand, the teacher who first encouraged him to consider acting as a profession.

“He was the one that put a copy of Shakespeare in my hand [and] said, ‘Now get up on your feet and perform’.”

Stewart’s lucky. We regret there was no teacher, in youth, that inspired us to such greatness.

Dave Chappelle’s Ears were Burning, Makes Surprise Appearance in Portland

We interrupt your normal weekly banter* to tell you that Dave Chappelle is alive and doing surprise gigs in Portland. Here’s a crowd shot of the 5000 plus people that showed up based on the power of a rumor.

You know how you talk about some one one day only to find them inexplicably popping back into consciousness the next day? Chappelle must have heard the conversations about him in Huntsville last night cause he made his almost secret appearance at damn near the same moment we were talking about him 1000 miles away.

As @mattpdx tells it, the “secret show” didn’t quite happened as the tiny amp he brought wasn’t cutting it and the full PA wasn’t working before @mattpdx left.

“I learned a lesson tonight: don’t tell a secret in Portland” – Dave Chappelle

Sundance gets Access to One Last Shot

Last year it was that “What’s Your Crime?” bit. This year, it’s polaroids of celebrities.

“I forgot to bring my deodorant, so I’ve been checking all day to make sure I’m not too offensive!”
-Transsiberian star Emily Mortimer on forgetting to bring one of the must-have items for a grueling day of press interviews.

“I’m trying to keep it all inside, but I could not be happier!”
-Colin Hanks to reporters at the premiere of The Great Buck Howard, which was produced by his famous father, Tom.

I’m not as amused as I was with last year’s scheme, but professional photos of “celebrities” always tends to draw my eye.
