A Damn Fine Short SciFi-Film: Aaron Sims’ ARCHETYPE , ‘Your Memories are Just a Glitch’

Official Synopsis

RL7 is an eight-foot tall combat robot that goes on the run after malfunctioning with vivid memories of once being human. As its creators and the military close in, RL7 battles its way to uncovering the shocking truth behind its mysterious visions and past.
Directed by: Aaron Sims
starring: Robert Joy (Land of the Dead, CSI:NY) and David Anders (Heroes, 24).

What We Learned: Special effects and animation veteran Aaron Sims released his $0 budget and completely unfunded labor of love, ARCHETYPE, on the Internets January 20, 2012. After watching it the first time we decided on the spot that ARCHETYPE is pretty fucking cool!

Like most Hollywood movies, all the usual tropes are covered. Unlike most Hollywood big action fare Aaron Sims made those tropes engaging and worth watching. We’ve already viewed this short more times than we care to mention.

Seven minutes is just not enough.

We hope this taste of the ARCHETYPE world generates enough buzz and gains financial backers so that he can fully visualize his labor of love. Note: we’re almost certain the concept art of Sims complete vision is featured in the credits. Stick around and watch those for once.

Thanks for all the positive feedback everyone! This has been a labor of love on a budget of $0 and it makes it all worth while when we see other poeple responding to it. Thank you! – Aaron Sims

Tuesday Tease: HASAKI YA SUDA, The Three Black Samurai

Official Synopsis

It is 2100. In the world engulfed in chaos and war whose residents are consumed by terrible hunger, the last fertile land became the subject of fierce battles. Three warriors: noble Wurubenba (Jacky Ido), Shandaru (Cedric Ido), who wants to avenge his father’s death, and Kapkaru (Min Man Ma) craving for power, will face one another in a fight for life and death.

What We Learned: Out there in the future open plains of Africa there are samurai roaming the land being all badass and shit.

Why We’ll Watch: Future black samurai warriors. This trailer took us by pleasant surprise. A quick search revealed HASAKI YA SUDA is a 25 minute short film made by French/Burkinabe filmmaker Cédric Ido. This IndieWire post from November 2011 explains the filmmaker’s biography in more detail. We’re here to talk about the trailer itself. The Akira Kurosawa influence is strong and welcomed.

Cédric is also a superhero fanboy, and plans to make films about black people that incorporate unlikely/unexpected elements, and that are within genres that historically and still currently ignore the contributions of people of African descent.

For once we get a film that steps outside the tropes Hollywood continues to force down the movie-going public’s throats year after year.

But enough of our soapbox. We mostly want to watch it because it looks badass.

When’s it coming? That is a bit vague. All signs point to some time in 2012.

Official site: Also, vague. there’s a Facebook page with not much on it. Once again we’ll point to the IndieWire article and the Live for Films article for good measure.

Our most favorite part of the year’s end is here. DJ Earworm released his latest United State of Pop mashup on December 25. We were too busy getting filled up on turkey and other goodstuffs to share then. But now…

Direct mp3 Download: United State of Pop 2011 (World Go Boom)

2011 gave us songs of regret and anger, pride and perseverance, and lots of fire.
When someone’s taken everything from you, what do you do?
WORLD GO BOOM

I’ve made some changes in the song selection process this year.
In efforts to better reflect the year, I have a system that draws from the weekly charts from throughout 2011 that ensures that all the late-breaking hits (such as “We Found Love” & “Sexy and I Know It”) are included in the 2011 mix.

Adele – Rolling In The Deep
Adele – Someone Like You
Black Eyed Peas – Just Can’t Get Enough
Bruno Mars – Grenade
Bruno Mars – The Lazy Song
Britney Spears – Till The World Ends
Cee Lo Green – F* You
Enrique Iglesias – Tonight (I’m Lovin’ You)
Foster the People – Pumped Up Kicks
Jennifer Lopez – On The Floor
Jeremih feat. 50 cent – Down On Me
Katy Perry – Firework
Katy Perry – E.T.
Katy Perry – Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)
Lady Gaga – Born This Way
LMFAO – Party Rock Anthem
LMFAO – Sexy and I Know It
Lupe Fiasco – The Show Goes On
Maroon 5 – Moves Like Jagger
Nicki Minaj – Super Bass
OneRepublic – Good Life
Pink – Raise Your Glass
Pitbull – Give Me Everything

Watch: The Great Inception, Charlie Chaplin’s THE GREAT DICTATOR Speech Mixed with Hans Zimmer’s INCEPTION Score

What a lovely mix. If you have not seen Chaplin’s THE GREAT DICTATOR you would do well to get right on that. It’s really a wonderful film. Also, you will see where Mike Myers stole homaged the image of Dr Evil using the world as his plaything for his Austin Powers series.

That chap, Charlie Chaplin, had the idea in 1940.

Moment of Who: 2010 Dr Who Intro, SNES Style. Listen to It!

Doctor Octoroc has done it again. We noticed his digital escapades when he did the 8-Bit Dr Horrible experience. Now he’s moved on to our other favorite non-medical physician, Doctor Who.

A Super Nintendo style recreation of the newest “Doctor Who” intro sequence. I arranged the track in FL Studio using SNES soundfonts from Chrono Trigger, A Link to the Past, Final Fantasy IV and F-Zero. If you’re wondering how I got that wizzing sound in the beginning, it was a combination of “Lavos” sound effects from Crono Trigger 🙂

We love what he did here. Hell, we think it’s better than the 11th Doctor’s proper intro.

Dropped below the cut is Doctor Octoroc’s version and the official version. Tell us what you think in the comments.

Thank You, Internet: Iron NASA is Just the Real Life Power Armor(Toy) We Were Looking For

Here’s a thing found randomly on the Internet. It poses the question, ‘what if Iron Man were made from NASA parts. This, in turn, begs us to ask the deeper question, WHY HASN’T NASA DONE THIS YET?!

The watermark points to a site called TOYSREVIL but we weren’t able to find the post where this Iron Man toy was featured.

Friday Night Movie: BEHOLD, The Wonders of the Universe, “A Cosmological Fantasia”

Physicist Brian Cox(who was a science consultant on Danny Boyle‘s lovely project SUNSHINE) hosts the BBC’s Wonders of the Universe which looks like a fantastic four part series about life, the universe and everything in it. Currently it’s only aired in the United Kingdom. This is a damn shame. Hey, History Channel/Discovery Channel/The Learning Channel! Why don’t we get awesome looking shows like this imported onto USA television?!

You could easily replace one of your silly shows like MonsterVision, Ancient Aliens or I-thought-I-Saw-a-Ghost-One-Time-but-it-Turned-Out-it-was-Just-a-Cat-in-Heat.

Above we have 15 minutes of visual effects created by BDH with a musical score by Timo Baker

Moment of Who: Watch SPACE/TIME, Dr Who ‘Red Nose Day’ Mini-Episode

This year’s Comic’s Relief Red Nose Day was once again brought to you by the Grand Moff himself, Steven Moffat.

We love it when he gets all timey wimey wibbley wobbley.

We also love it when Mofffat asks the questions that all hard-core geeks undoubtedly get into fights over at 3 in the morning on Friday nights. He is truly One Of Us.
