The Sunday Punch: Imagine the Teen Exploits of Bruce Wayne in GOTHAM HIGH
Posted by mistergroonk in Animation, Intertube Madness on July 3, 2011
The following is an animated series premise that got lost in the shuffle of Batman premises sent to DC.
The Story Synopsis:
We all go through incredible changes as teenagers: growth spurts, bad skin, a sudden insatiable need to uphold justice and avenge your murdered parents…. Well, that is if you’re Bruce Wayne.
As if being a freshman at Gotham High wasn’t tough enough, Bruce’s insomnia and technological fascinations are taking their toll. Instead of spending his time studying, he has begun to obsess over an emerging personality trait: Batman. But under the watchful eye of his guardian and steward, Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce is forced to put his intelligence to good use: graduating high school. But given his classmates, can Bruce survive Gotham High?
Comics Internet would undoubtedly have grown a second head in order to better protest this incarnation of the Bat-verse. We think it would have been a fun romp. Gotahm High would have been a helluva lot better than the uninspired The Batman series that did get made.

Focus: DC to Reboot their Superheroes August 31, Comics Internet Loses Its Shit
Posted by mistergroonk in Comics, Intertube Madness on June 1, 2011

It’s the announcement that will stir fanboy comments for days. DC is rolling back the odometer on their entire line of superhero books to #1. To be honest, this move doesn’t affect us that much. In our opinion it is at once a ballsy and desperate move. A move needed to be made in comics publication and DC, apparently, was the one to do it. There can’t be anything wrong with bringing new readers to love the superheros books we loved reading as a kid, can there?
The bit of information that we found most interesting was the same-day digital distribution aka day-and-date. This basically means the digital book will release the same day as the printed book. This is a big deal, comics folks.
Make no mistake, this entire endeavor is focused on the digital market. DC isn’t dumb. They know print is dying. They know they have no chance at beating Marvel in the print market, as years and years of examples have proven. Rejuvenating the characters (literally) and providing a fresh start all across the line isn’t about a quick sales bump in the direct market; it isn’t about the direct market at all. It’s so that people logging into comiXology to check out these digital DC comics they’ve heard about don’t see an issue number in the 900s after Action Comics and throw up their hands.
It’s worth noting:
In an interview with USA Today, Dan DiDio stated that while roughly three-quarters of titles will see a creative team switch-up, one quarter — the books that are working — won’t be touched by the reboot.
Because despite what most ardent fanboys may think, DC is not completely stupid.
Comics Alliance writer David Uzumeri points out a possible roadblock in the same-day digital distribution angle that we hadn’t figured.
they’ll have essentially supplanted the Jell-O hand of the Comics Code Authority with the actual iron hand of Apple’s content restrictions. One of the theoretical benefits of digital distribution should be decreasing overhead time; by working through Apple, they’re just going to make things worse. It’s in the best interest of DC, comiXology and the entire industry to find a way to get around Steve Jobs and his draconian approval process — or establish some kind of partnership that will allow them a higher degree of creative autonomy.
As a company Apple has a right to handle their online store business as it sees fit. But all of us have the right not to be hindered by what Steve Jobs considers is moral and worthy of Apple distribution. Luckily, these days, we have a choice. The Android marketplace may be a bit wild but this is as it should be. Innovation comes from such wild places. Since ComiXology has an Android presence, we wonder if what may be slow to appear on the iPod/iPhone/iPad app will be instantly accessible on the Android app. Thus giving Android a slight advantage regarding DC’s new day-and-date policy.
DC’s Flashpoint may have far more overreaching effects than we first considered. Be sure to give Uzumeri’s Comics Alliance post a full read.

Remake/Remodel Watch: Coming Soon on HBO, Aquaman!
Posted by mistergroonk in Art, Artist, Comics on April 27, 2011
Let’s face it, we’re gonna need something stellar to wash the taste of ENTOURAGE out of our brains. GAME OF THRONES is one helluva good start, that’s for sure. Why not get ahead of the game on good TV? Sorry, we meant HBO.*
So your INSTRUCTIONS are:
Design a publicity poster for an adaptation of the DC Comics property AQUAMAN — for HBO. HBO is the home of DEADWOOD, THE WIRE, THE SOPRANOS, ROME, BOARDWALK EMPIRE, you know the score… and therefore you know their stable of showrunners, people like David Simon and David Milch… and the sort of material they do.
We jumped in on the ground floor of this challenge. Paul Sizer has yet to throw his weighty pen around the forum. Be sure to revisit all this week for more submissions.
Pia Guerra made a beautiful statement with few words:
Always remember, Remake/Remodels are meant to be wild reinterpretations of beloved, or silly, characters.

The Sunday Punch: Mimoco’s Batman USB Flash Drive
Posted by mistergroonk in Comics, Technology on January 9, 2011
We know there is more serious and pertinent Batman news out there in the Internets. But we were caught a bit short-handed. An overload of all the noise Islamic Batman is stirring in the greatly judgmental “comics internet” will be collected and touched on next Sunday.
For today enjoy the innocence of the Batman USB drive.

Thanks to the Great White Snark, we’re looking at our pathetically small Lego collection and frowning.
Lego minifig customizer and photographer Julian Fong–a.k.a., the grown-up equivalent of the kid I would have made friends with in grade school just so I could play with his awesome toys–has created an impeccable custom Lego minifig for just about every* superhero of note from the DC Universe.

Remake/Remodeled: Wild West Mister Miracle
Posted by mistergroonk in Art, Artist, Comics on September 8, 2010
The Whitechapel forum is taking a week off from last week’s nerdgasm event of imagining the 13th Doctor Who. We’ve seen Ben Templesmith’s 13th Doctor fly through our TweetDeck more than once since then.
Not one to rest on his laurels, Twitter friend, and comics artist, @Ten_Bandits, created his own Remake/Remodel: a Wild West Mister Miracle.
This is the first time we’ve been able to look at Jack Kirby’s creation with any kind of respect. No offense to Kirby. We made ours Marvel long before discovering the fantastic art of “The King.”
Compare and contrast with Mister Miracle’s original design.
@Ten_Bandits is threatening to please Internet eyes with a Wild West Big Barda.
We can’t wait.
