Remake/Remodeled: Wild West Mister Miracle

The Whitechapel forum is taking a week off from last week’s nerdgasm event of imagining the 13th Doctor Who. We’ve seen Ben Templesmith’s 13th Doctor fly through our TweetDeck more than once since then.

Not one to rest on his laurels, Twitter friend, and comics artist, @Ten_Bandits, created his own Remake/Remodel: a Wild West Mister Miracle.

This is the first time we’ve been able to look at Jack Kirby’s creation with any kind of respect. No offense to Kirby. We made ours Marvel long before discovering the fantastic art of “The King.”

Compare and contrast with Mister Miracle’s original design.

@Ten_Bandits is threatening to please Internet eyes with a Wild West Big Barda.

We can’t wait.

International Read Comics in Public Day is August 28. Happy Birthday, Jack Kirby!

If you look closer at the photo inset you’ll notice we already “read comics in public.” No special day required.

But almost any holiday is a good reason to celebrate.

Hey @HavenComics, what are you planning for the occasion?

Business Time. #scottpilgrim #beerandliterature on TwitpicThe concept is fairly simple: we’re asking that everyone take an hour or two out of their day on August 28th (also the birthday of Jack “King” Kirby, incidentally) to read a comic book in a public setting—a park bench, a beach, a bus, the front steps of your local library (we do ask, however, that you be mindful of local loitering laws). Let strangers see you reading a piece of sequential art.

Take to the streets. Be proud. If someone asks what you’re reading, say, “a comic book” (the phrase “graphic novel is also acceptable, but let’s face it, it sort of defeats the whole purpose). Heck, lend them a book, if you’ve got an extra—what better way to make a new friend and convert a new reader?

While you’re at it, why not get a friend to snap a picture of you reading? Send it along and we’ll post it up for you in our photo gallery and on our site.

Kirby Family Moves to Retain Rights of 45 Characters from Marvel(Disney)

By now you know that the children of Jack Kirby filed to reclaim the rights of 45 characters from Marvel. Characters that include the X-Men, Fantastic Four, Thor and the Hulk.

Under copyright law, creators and co-creators can seek to regain copyrights they previously assigned to a company 56 years after first publication and can give notice of their intentions to do so up to 10 years before that.

Kirby’s children would be eligible to claim their father’s share of the copyright of the Fantastic Four in 2017, while the Hulk would come up in 2018 and X-Men in 2019. The copyrights would then run for 39 more years before expiring, after which the characters would enter the public domain under current law.

What you may not know is these creator’s rights struggles are decades in the making. Just ask Steve Ditko or the Superman heirs.

The Comics Journal speaks on this in excellent detail:

Steve Rogers/Captain America 1941 – 2007

Yes. He’s a fictional character.

No. I’m not crying over it. But I will muse over it, after I’ve had a few hours of shut eye.

captain america small.jpgCaptain America is dead. The Marvel Entertainment superhero, created in 1941 as a patriotic adversary for the Nazis, is killed off in Captain America #25, which hits the stands today.

[…]

His death is sure to ignite controversy in the comic book world – still reeling from Superman’s death in 1993 and resurrection the following year – and even political pundits, who may see Captain America’s demise as an allegory for the United States.

“It’s a hell of a time for him to go. We really need him now,” said co-creator Joe Simon, 93, after being informed of his brainchild’s death.

Simon and artist Jack Kirby came up with the character in 1941 as an adversary for Adolf Hitler, who was more evil than any villain the pair could dream up. Since then, the patriotic hero has appeared in an estimated 210 million copies sold in 75 countries.

Finding that Kirby Krackle

The internet’s a strange and unforgiving beast. If I wanted information on the latest shameless whoreslut or new trends of crazy and lazy, all I need do is walk into the room with my hands outstretched.

But when I need information on something pure or any kind of worthwhile enterprise(like the art of Steranko). I have to kick the door in, wave a shotgun in one hand and a twinkie in the other and shout at the top of my being, “Where in FUCK is the shit?!?”

And still I get nothing.

This time the search invovled “Kirby Krackles” (or “Kirby Dots“). Those various shaped circles that usually denote crackling energy blasts or power sources.

The secret, I’ve gleaned, is the negative space around the dots. That’s where the power lies.

Kirby did this little trick back in the 60s. He really was ahead of his time.

Here’s a screenshot of the first page of Penciljack’s forum.

A more formal critique of the Kirby Crackle is at Two Morrows.
