Our Strange Sky: The Pileus Iridescent Cloud of Ethiopia

Pictured, behind this darker cloud, is a pileus iridescent cloud, a group of water droplets that have a uniformly similar size and so together diffract different colors of sunlight by different amounts. The above image was taken just after the picturesque sight was noticed by chance by a photographer in Ethiopia.

Good Morning, Edinburgh. King Penguin Sir Nils, Colonel of the Norwegian Royal Guard, will Inspect You Now.

This is Sir Nils, Colonel of the Norwegian Royal Guard. He is a king penguin. He is also a knight.

We are not kidding.

Nils Olav was given the rank of visekorporal (lance corporal) and has been promoted each time the King’s Guard has returned to the Tattoo. In 1982 he was made corporal, and promoted to sergeant in 1987. Nils Olav died shortly after his promotion to sergeant, and his place of honour was taken by Nils Olav II, his two-year-old near-double. He was promoted in 1993 to the rank of regimental sergeant major. On August 18, 2005, he was promoted to Colonel-in-Chief[5] and on 15 August 2008 he was awarded a knighthood. He is the first penguin to receive such an honour in the Norwegian army.

If you are wondering why Sir Nils is a knight and you’re not:

which described Nils as a penguin “in every way qualified to receive the honour and dignity of knighthood”.

There you go.

Department of Redundancy Department: Del Monte to Sell Single Bananas Wrapped in Plastic, What?

While the trial may seem bizarre at a time when big businesses are under pressure to reduce packaging waste, Del Monte insists the addition of a clear plastic bag is actually a green measure.

The company claims that the bag contains ‘Controlled Ripening Technology’ – which extends the shelf-life of the banana by up to six days.

The banana is put into the plastic bag when it is green and, according to the manufacturers, goes on to ripen more slowly than if it had been left in the open air.

The product is also being trialled in the U.S. where the wrapped bananas are selling for one dollar each

For $1 a piece we’d rather pay a banana spider to take a nibble on our leg. The bite is dangerous and quite possibly deadly. But a side-effect from this horrible exercise: uncontrollable boners.

At least the banana spider gives us something we can use.

Mystery from the Deep: Loch Ness Monster’s Cousin, Bownessie, Futurephoned. Still Fuzzy.

Here’s what witness/kayaker Mr Pickles had to say about his encounter. (No we didn’t make up that name. All reports mark his name as Tom Pickles. You may continue with jokes about clowns and “pickle testers.”)

‘I thought it was a dog,’ said Tom. ‘Then I realised it was much bigger and moving really quickly. Each hump was moving in a rippling motion and it was swimming fast. I could tell it was much bigger underneath from the huge shadow around it.

‘Its skin was like a seal’s but its shape was abnormal – it’s not like any animal I’ve ever seen before. We saw it for about 20 seconds. It was petrifying. We paddled back to the shore straight away.’

The monster in question was not the Loch Ness Monster of long time fame. It was Bownessie of more recent fame. Bownessie has been spotted in Lake Windermere since 1955. Reports of this creature swimming about the northern England lake have been on an uptick since 2006.

Yes, we understand it’s via The Daily Mail. Remarking on strangeness in the world was once the main thrust of this site. We’ll allow this photo of a sea-based monster living in our times to slip through our Daily Mail BS censors. Why are all the photos of sea monsters, sky monsters or what-have-you blurry as the morning after St Patrick’s Day? Seriously, we either need to develop higher standards for monster photos or create mandatory photography classes for anyone rich enough to buy their fancy camera phones.

This story is pretty old by internet standards so we ran a new search for Bownessie to see what have discovered since this mid-February sighting. It seems even cryptozologists had there doubts about the photo’s authenticity.

While the photo has made the rounds of the Internet, professional “cryptozoologists” or people who study animals that haven’t been identified by science, say they have their doubts.

“I’m always cautious of photographs,” said Loren Coleman, director of the International Cryptozoology Museum in Portland, Maine, and author of “Cryptozoology: A to Z.”

“If you look at this photograph, its pretty distinct with these humps. We have seen this kind of thing before, sometimes it’s garbage bags tied together and sometimes it’s anonymous creatures.”

No doubt this guy has received countless “strange photos” from dubious origins. But everyone loves a good monster mystery.

They love it until said monster starts eating pets and children, anyway.

Our Strange Sky: Fish Gotta Swim. Birds Gotta DIE!

While backtracking on old news we’d like to file in the ‘that’s odd’ or ‘wtf’ mental file cabinet we discovered there’s a lot of large groups of animals falling dead from the skies or ceasing to swim in the lakes/seas.

About 5,000 red-winged blackbirds fall from the sky in Arkansas
Around the beginning of 2011, this happened:

“It’s important to understand that a sick bird can’t fly. So whatever happened to these birds happened very quickly,” Rowe told CNN Radio on Sunday.

“Something must have caused these birds to flush out of the trees at night, where they’re normally just roosting and staying in the treetops … and then something got them out of the air and caused their death and then they fell to earth,” Rowe added.

Rowe confirmed her theory in the USA Today.

It was someone shooting off professional grade fireworks in a residential district, scaring the night-blind birds out of their roost into a 25-mph flight that ran them into houses, signs and even the ground, says Karen Rowe, Arkansas Game and Fish Commission ornithologist.

“They were bouncing off houses, basketball backboards, trucks,” she says.

[…]

In addition, neighbors were also setting off fireworks and bottle rockets, which further confused the birds who were now madly trying to get back to their safe perches, Rowe says.

“I talked to individuals who were outside when the birds started crashing into things,” she says. After the birds took flight they would have been completely disoriented and flying at a high rate of speed, “most likely about 25 mph, given my experience with their cousins, the tricolored blackbird,” Meese says.

They would have flown up into the air, then back down looking for a safe place to roost.

“This rapid descent of living birds crashing into these multiple obstacles then caused the loud noises reported by the residents of Beebe, especially those that flew into rooftops or walls of houses,” Meese says. “This also accounts for the blunt force trauma to the breasts.”

That’s it people. It was just a massive amount of birds disturbed from their sleep by drunk humans. Not aliens. Not black helicopters. No sonic booms.

Although we admit to wanting to believe @LeeCamp’s theory.

Dozens of drunken birds fall dead from alcohol poisoning in Romania

They alerted authorities, fearing the birds had died from avian flu.

But local veterinary officials decided the starlings had died after eating grape ‘marc’ – the leftovers from the wine-making process.

Well that was simple.

Hundreds of birds found dead near I-65

The birds were found by motorists in the early morning hours about 4 miles south of Athens on the shoulder of I-65, near the Brown’s Ferry Road exit.

via waaytv

What can we learn from all this?
All of these mass wildlife deaths point to the simple fact that Arkansas Game and Fish Commission ornithologist Karen Rowe was correct in this assumption.

But it’s taught Rowe that she and other wildlife experts need to do a better job of educating the public about the fact that wild animals die all the time. A bird that manages to hatch and leave the nest still has only a 70% chance of making it to its first birthday, she points out.

“Birds don’t go to the bird hospital and get put on life support and die there. They just die. Mother Nature is not a nice lady,” she says.

Our Strange Sky: Photos of Mystery Missile Launch Alarms Californians, Stirs Debate

Pentacleus informed us of a strange sighting of the California coast just a day ago. With a little doing, we tracked down a handful of articles focusing on the weirdness. Here’s a bit from Daily tech:

The event alarmed many in the public. Visible in the skies over LA, the site triggered many to call emergency hotlines or local defense phone lines.

The mystery has deepened as sources at the Pentagon claim to know nothing of the missile. Stated Pentagon spokesman Col. Dave Lapan, “Nobody within the Department of Defense that we’ve reached out to has been able to explain what this contrail is, where it came from… It does seem implausible, and that’s why at this point the operative term is ‘unexplained’. Nobody … within the Department of Defense that we’ve reached out to has been able to explain what this contrail is.”

Col. Lapan indicated a private contractor might be responsible. California is a hotbed of the aerospace industry, and test launches are commonplace, coming from offshore boats or platforms. Typically, though, someone is informed.

Well either this is not typical or someone forgot we live in the 21st century. A time filled with digital cameras and instant information.

Video of the report and extra conjecture under the jump.

Our Strange Sky: New Yorkers Want to Believe. Spies a UFO, Balloon.

New Yorkers were dazzled and amazed by a floating bit of shiny in their skies just the other day. They gazed upwards in wonder at what looked to us like a reprise of Balloon Boy. Remember him?

You see this screen cap below? We’re not even going to bother to photoshop a pointer for this.

A retired US Air Force officer prophesied the mysterious objects coming back in September 13.

Mr Fulham stated the extraterrestrials would neither land nor make any communication with Earth on Wednesday.

But their presence would be “the first in a series intended to avert a planetary catastrophe resulting from increasing levels of carbon-dioxide in the earth’s atmosphere dangerously approaching a ‘critical mass’. (…) They are aware from eons of experience with other planets in similar conditions their sudden intervention would cause fear and panic.”

He says their contact with Earth is part of their process of leading mankind into accepting the “alien reality and technologies for the removal of poisonous gases from the earth’s atmosphere in 2015, if not sooner”.

Mr Fulham, we would love for this to be a Spielbergian CLOSE ENCOUNTERS, a Roddenberryesque FIRST CONTACT, or, hell, even an ALF moment. But why would a space-faring civilization be that on-point about humanity cleaning up the atmosphere by 2015? Instead of choosing to “meet our leaders” they buzz Chelsea like a gang of college stoners looking for the only Piggly Wiggly that carries their flavor of cornettos. We won’t even mention that in a town of millions were half the citizens have futurephones or HD cameras, not a damn one of them could get a clear shot of a stationary object in broad daylight.

To say that we are skeptical would be an understatement.

Now look at what happened in China back in July.

There are streaks and flares and general military grade weirdness going on in that photo.

China is outdoing us in UFO encounters. China.

We remember a time when there wasn’t a cow left not butchered, a field left standing tall or a farm hand questioning his sexual determination after that night he once saw “fire in the sky.”

Come on America. We can do this. We can’t let China beat us to the strange-ness.

Let’s call down the mothership together.
