Art-Out Moment: Conjunction Junction Train Model of a Function

We spent many mornings dedicated to Saturday morning cartoons in the 1970s and 1980s. Between the airings of Mighty Orbots and Dungeons & Dragons, the television studios treated the kid faring nation with the animated musical educational theater Schoolhouse Rocks. This is one of the avenues where we learned our math, American history, science and, of course, grammar.

Starship Modeler’s Silly Week proves that the inspiration did not stop with the basics of education. As you can see above, Alvis 3.1 has taken to the arts and recreated the eponymous “Conjunction Junction.” The results, in our not so humble opinion, is bloody gorgeous. Follow the link to see closer views of “and”, “but” and “or”.

Today in Star Wars: @MattStaggs Investigates TIE Fighter and Why You’ll Never Play It Again

I loved everything about the TIE fighter: the whine of the twin ion engines and the BLAT BLAT BLAT of its weaponry, the cool pilot’s uniform and the very design aesthetic of the craft itself – not a thought toward air resistance (obviously useless in space) or even a perfunctory nod toward resembling anything organic. While piloting the fighters was a blast, TIE Fighter was no mere simulation: –Matt Staggs

Sadly, we never had a chance to play TIE Fighter. X-Wing was our game of choice. It was also the only game our college friends had on their personal computing device.

Read SUVUDU for Staggs‘ full memory lane.

Good Morning, Young Storybreaking Dungeons and Dragons Astronauts

It’s a little crazy for us to remember this exact newspaper flyer back in the 1980s. Back then, we were the intended Saturday Morning demographic. The only shows of interest to us back then was Dungeons&Dragons and CBS Storybreak. You would think The Young Astronauts would have been on our radar. It must have gotten bumped by Mighty Orbots or a show equally awesomer.

Hell, even Internet doesn’t remember Young Astronauts.

Open Your Eyes My Little Friend, BEST WORST MOVIE has a Poster

If there’s anything you learn in this world it must be this: TROLL 2 was made and it is the most god-awful thing you’ll ever put into your eyes. We’re talking GIGLI bad. BATTLEFIELD EARTH horrible.

Don’t take our word for it. Search the You Tube for the infamous bad movie montage. Better yet check out this Montage of Wonder and Awe on Vimeo.

Over the last 20 years the maddest thing happened. TROLL 2 became a cult sensation. Blame MST3K. Blame the ironic hipster culture where everything (and we mean everything) that is bad is good. Blame it on the rain for all the good it’ll do you. TROLL 2 is celebrated in its awfulness by a select group of fans all over the nation and there’s nothing you can do about it.

You can do nothing but make a documentary about acting in the BEST WORST MOVIE ever made, that is.

Directed by the annoying 10 year old child star of the worst movie ever made, BEST WORST MOVIE is a documentary exploring the behind the scenes happenings of TROLL 2. Judging from the independent awards and the current 100% freshness on Rotten Tomatoes, BEST WORST MOVIE needs to play at a theater near us some time soon.

Trailer after the jump.

#MusicMonday: Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World has a Video Game, Anamanaguchi Sneak Peek

Thankfully, they’re using Bryan Lee O’Malley’s art for the Scott Pilgrim video game. We’ve given Michael Cera a temporary pass at playing the titular character based on the epic teaser trailer released last week. Controlling his epic digital battles would be another matter altogether.

The 8-bit punk band Anamanaguchi provides the music for the Scott Pilgrim video game tie-in. Give them a listen below the jump.

DON’T YOU FORGET ABOUT ME: A John Hughes Documentary

Because of the John Hughes tribute during the Oscars last night, we learned(via Twitter, of course) of the documentary Don’t You Forget About Me. In which a group of filmmakers set out to find the 80s teen movie director. Johns Hughes died unexpectedly during their production. They shifted focus and dedicated the film to his memory.

Being an affirmed child of 80s movies we would love to see this documentary but we’re having the damnedest time tracking the flick down in the USA.

The X Days of Xmas: Have Yourself a Nervous Breakdown / Doctor Who Christmas

You really should read more.

A Nervous Breakdown Christmas
A quick search on The Nervous Breakdown gives you a handful of authors willing to share their Christmases with you.

Below lay an excerpt from Will Entrekin‘s “The Evolution of the Christmas Jollies”

Tim’s voice remains clear: “You still get the Christmas Jollies?” No eleven year old should be able to manage such derision, but as Timmy’s height was ahead of his years, so was his condescension. I was only eleven or so myself, and I didn’t exactly know what the Christmas Jollies were, but somehow I sensed from the tone of Timmy’s voice that having them was akin to having cooties. Maybe worse.

Now you’d better finish that story. You know what they say will happen if you don’t finish.

Paul Cornell’s The 12 Blogs of Christmas
Paul Cornell, writer of one of our favorite Doctor Who two-parters “Human Nature/Family of Blood” has been in the holiday spirit over on his blog.

…welcome to the first of my 12 Blogs of Christmas, where, as in the last few years, I’ll be presenting hopefully exciting new stuff over the next twelve days, covering, in a festive manner, the three worlds I move in: science fiction; comics and Doctor Who.

He started this on December 12, so if you’re behind, like us, you got a lot of reading to do. Like this short story Doctor Who, professionally written piece of fan fiction “The Last Doctor.” Free fan fiction from a professional writer who normally gets paid to pen Who stories. These are blessed times we live in.
