It was a long road home one Christmas Eve when the choice came. Stop for a bite to eat or listen to Jonathan Winter’s read A Christmas Carol over the radio station we had just found. There was no choice really. While our belly grumbled with hunger on the ride home, our heart was full of smiles.

Master comedian Jonathan Winters presents a distinctive reading of this holiday classic, using a special performing edition prepared by Dickens for his own presentations. He re-creates Ebenezer Scrooge, Bob Cratchit, Tiny Tim, Jacob Marley’s spirit and the three Christmas ghosts: Past, Present and Future. Mimi Kennedy also performs.

Tim’s voice remains clear: “You still get the Christmas Jollies?” No eleven year old should be able to manage such derision, but as Timmy’s height was ahead of his years, so was his condescension. I was only eleven or so myself, and I didn’t exactly know what the Christmas Jollies were, but somehow I sensed from the tone of Timmy’s voice that having them was akin to having cooties. Maybe worse.

Now you’d better finish that story. You know what they say will happen if you don’t finish.

The x Days of Xmas: Geek Ornaments for Your Soul

There are only so many days left until that jolly fat man comes knocking on our doors, chimneys and mantles. A definite amount of days. An indefinite amount of items for which we care to share. The “x” is the variable. The unknown amount of time which seeks to be solved. The “Xmas” is a Futurama reference that good little boys and girls will get and enjoy.
