Our Strange Sky: Fish Gotta Swim. Birds Gotta DIE!

While backtracking on old news we’d like to file in the ‘that’s odd’ or ‘wtf’ mental file cabinet we discovered there’s a lot of large groups of animals falling dead from the skies or ceasing to swim in the lakes/seas.

About 5,000 red-winged blackbirds fall from the sky in Arkansas
Around the beginning of 2011, this happened:

“It’s important to understand that a sick bird can’t fly. So whatever happened to these birds happened very quickly,” Rowe told CNN Radio on Sunday.

“Something must have caused these birds to flush out of the trees at night, where they’re normally just roosting and staying in the treetops … and then something got them out of the air and caused their death and then they fell to earth,” Rowe added.

Rowe confirmed her theory in the USA Today.

It was someone shooting off professional grade fireworks in a residential district, scaring the night-blind birds out of their roost into a 25-mph flight that ran them into houses, signs and even the ground, says Karen Rowe, Arkansas Game and Fish Commission ornithologist.

“They were bouncing off houses, basketball backboards, trucks,” she says.

[…]

In addition, neighbors were also setting off fireworks and bottle rockets, which further confused the birds who were now madly trying to get back to their safe perches, Rowe says.

“I talked to individuals who were outside when the birds started crashing into things,” she says. After the birds took flight they would have been completely disoriented and flying at a high rate of speed, “most likely about 25 mph, given my experience with their cousins, the tricolored blackbird,” Meese says.

They would have flown up into the air, then back down looking for a safe place to roost.

“This rapid descent of living birds crashing into these multiple obstacles then caused the loud noises reported by the residents of Beebe, especially those that flew into rooftops or walls of houses,” Meese says. “This also accounts for the blunt force trauma to the breasts.”

That’s it people. It was just a massive amount of birds disturbed from their sleep by drunk humans. Not aliens. Not black helicopters. No sonic booms.

Although we admit to wanting to believe @LeeCamp’s theory.

Dozens of drunken birds fall dead from alcohol poisoning in Romania

They alerted authorities, fearing the birds had died from avian flu.

But local veterinary officials decided the starlings had died after eating grape ‘marc’ – the leftovers from the wine-making process.

Well that was simple.

Hundreds of birds found dead near I-65

The birds were found by motorists in the early morning hours about 4 miles south of Athens on the shoulder of I-65, near the Brown’s Ferry Road exit.

What can we learn from all this?
All of these mass wildlife deaths point to the simple fact that Arkansas Game and Fish Commission ornithologist Karen Rowe was correct in this assumption.

But it’s taught Rowe that she and other wildlife experts need to do a better job of educating the public about the fact that wild animals die all the time. A bird that manages to hatch and leave the nest still has only a 70% chance of making it to its first birthday, she points out.

“Birds don’t go to the bird hospital and get put on life support and die there. They just die. Mother Nature is not a nice lady,” she says.

Crocodile on a Plane Deadlier than Snakes. Causes Plane Crash

Crocodile Smile.jpg

Scientific American reports that wildlife smugglers will do anything for a buck. A crash back in August was not caused by a lack of fuel but from a crocodile. The future suitcase was smuggled onto the plane and somehow got free.

This illegal activity reached a devastating and absurdist extreme recently when a man reportedly smuggled a live crocodile onto a plane departing from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The crocodile got loose, the crew and passengers panicked, and the plane crashed, killing 20 people.

Oddly enough, the crocodile survived the crash, only to be hacked to death by machete-wielding locals on the ground.

Chuck Patterson Paddles Into the Sea, Films Sharks Stalking Him

I paddle out on my Hobie Stand up paddle board, 250 yards by myself and within minutes a shark surprised me with a swing of his tail, almost knocking me into the water. The shark swam away and another 7′ shark appeared and circled my board off and on for 12 minutes. it was an insane experience which i hope to enjoy again soon.

Not only is Chuck Patterson insane, he takes damn good amateur video. Hopefully, he’ll live long enough to make more.

Video dropped under the cut.

In Germany: Living Ghosts of Chernobyl, Radioactive Boar on the Rise

Warmer winters have contributed to a rise in wild boar in Germany. They’re frightening residents and attacking people in parks. Well, it was one person but he was in a wheelchair.

But that’s not the only problem. A quarter of a century after Chernobyl, wild boar have become radioactive from eating mushrooms and truffles. Their delicacies are particularly efficient at absorbing radiation, it seems.

Even worse, though, almost a quarter century after the Chernobyl nuclear meltdown in Ukraine, a good chunk of Germany’s wild boar population remains slightly radioactive — and the phenomenon has been costing the German government an increasing amount of money in recent years.

According to the Environment Ministry in Berlin, almost €425,000 ($555,000) was paid out to hunters in 2009 in compensation for wild boar meat that was too contaminated by radiation to be sold for consumption. That total is more than four times higher than compensation payments made in 2007.

[…]

Many of the boar that are killed land on the plates of diners across Germany, but it is forbidden to sell meat containing high levels of radioactive caesium-137 — any animals showing contamination levels higher than 600 becquerel per kilogram must be disposed of. But in some areas of Germany, particularly in the south, wild boar routinely show much higher levels of contamination. According to the Environment Ministry, the average contamination for boar shot in Bayerischer Wald, a forested region on the Bavarian border with the Czech Republic, was 7,000 becquerel per kilogram. Other regions in southern Germany aren’t much better.

Man Punches Polar Bear in Nose, Survives. Gets Handshake.

Most days, the bear gets you. Last July, Wes Werbowy got the bear.

“The bear was like an apparition,” he said. “There was no beginning of the movement; there was no subtlety. It was ‘Vroomp!’ [and] he was there.

“The front of my tent is collapsed inward, and his nose is about two feet from my face.”

If Werbowy’s situation was not already dire enough, he said the polar bear was standing on his firearm, which he had left at the front of his now-collapsed tent.

So Werbowy said he did what an Inuit elder once told him to do: punch the polar bear in the nose.

“I quite believed it’s going to be the last thing I ever did, so I might as well do a good job,” he said. “The bear vanished as rapidly as he appeared.”

Every story, from now on, must include onomatopoeia.

This guy is full of life and anecdotes.

“My uncle fought a bear three times,” Enuapik told The Canadian Press. “The three encounters he had with a bear, he always would punch its nose. It’s the most sensitive part of the polar bear.”

Don’t take our word for it. Have a listen to his story in this CBC News interview.

Honestly, we can’t get enough of his words.

“I do not have a scratch, and the bear is alive. We didn’t have to kill him,” he said. “It was a win-win-win all the way around.”

Triple win, indeed. In the interview, Werbowy mentions telling an elder. of what he did. The elder replied that. “it was a good thing he did. That bear will never bother another human again.”
