John Byrne Wants to Capture Internet Screams, Suggests Rob Liefeld do “WATCHMEN 2”

From comics veteran John Byrne’s message board:
I was watching a few minutes of the WATCHMEN movie on cable last night, and I found myself musing on the notion of a “prequel†or sequel to the original comicbook series.
In WATCHMEN, Moore inverted — I might say perverted — pretty much everything the superhero genre is all about. He was not the first to do so, but WATCHMEN was the first time we got it all in such a concentrated dose. Largely, this seems to have happened because Moore is very much a one trick pony. The one trick works for him and his fans, so no problem there, I guess. But this got me to thinking about who would be a suitable candidate to produce another round of WATCHMEN.
The thought began to take shape in my head that any revisiting of those characters should be a continuation of the “tradition†of WATCHMEN. That is, as Moore trashed everything superheroes were all about, the next go-round should do the same with WATCHMEN itself. So the ideal candidate for doing the project should be someone who is equally a one trick pony, but from the opposite end of the spectrum. Immediately, one name sprang to the forefront: Rob Liefeld.
No, I’m not kidding. Liefeld would be to WATCHMEN what Moore was to superheroes in general. And it would be such fun to watch a whole flock of retailer’s heads exploding, as they tried to serve two entirely different faces of mammon!

Sorry, Byrne. Your argument is invalid.

Why won’t Warner Brothers Share a Halloween TRICK ‘R TREAT?
Posted by mistergroonk in Holiday, Movies, Trailers on October 25, 2008
While the lot of you pack in to theaters to indulge yourselves with the latest in the gorn series, SAW V.
Really? SAW 5?
I understand that the first SAW is worth it’s weight in corn syrup and I’ll get around to watching that one before the next apocalypse. Did such a, possibly, Nightmare Fuel Unleaded original need to be diluted by a factor of 4?
This is especially confusing when there seem to be a slew of original and highly rated(by those lucky enough to see them) horror flicks waiting for distributors. I’m not even close to being a horror movie fan but these odd business practices are more than a little frustrating.
Here is a snippet of an article on why TRICK ‘R TREAT won’t get released by Warner Brothers via Michael Dougherty’s MySpace:
…why won’t Warner Brothers, which co-financed the flick with Legendary Pictures, open this film, if not wide then at least on limited basis? Personally, I’d go with wide as I feel this is the kind of film that will pack ’em in at malls across North America. There’s really something for everyone here, a fact that would help drive word-of-mouth. Neither a sequel, a torture flick, a J-horror knock-off, or an idiosyncratic vision such as Rob Zombie’s HALLOWEEN, TRICK ‘R TREAT may be exactly the kind of meat-and-potatoes horror that general audiences are looking for these days.
There are rumors flying that TRICK ‘r TREAT will be released in Spring 09. Which makes about as much sense as releasing a Christmas movie in July.
Michael Dougherty more than proved his skills to me in the writing of X-MEN and the (much better) X2. Give the guy a chance, Suits.
Let him shine on.
Mark Twain will Disturb You with Clay

As this Ghosting of My Senses stumbles forward at a haphazard pace, like some hypoglycemic zombie, I find myself digging further and deeper into the psyche of my youth. Many things were Nightmare Fuel to a Young Groonk who knew everything and yet nothing of the world. The sad fact is TV proved to be my window into many aspects of fiction and reality. Not even cable TV. Just the basic three networks(not counting PBS) and if the wind blew easterly with a damp chill in the air, I managed to get a clear view of UHF, syndication’s home on the waves.
This is how I was exposed to the 1985 claymation children’s tale “The Adventures of Mark Twain.†Twelve year old me was chilled by one scene in particular. The sequence involved was loosely based on Twain’s “The Mysterious Stranger.†In it the comic/tragic devil(see: Satan) creates a tiny clay society of tiny clay people. The people’s incessant bickering soon irritates the devil(see also: angel) and so he wipes them out with a storm compounded by an earthquake.
Out of the entire movie this scene, these haunting images, stayed with me until this day. And now, I pass them over to you.
