Tuesday Tease: Sylvain Chomet’s THE ILLUSIONIST Reminds What Animation Should Be

Official Synopsis

An old magician on the decline meets a young girl that will change his life forever. Based on an original script by French comic genius, Jacques Tati.

What We Learned:

  • Rabbits are a tricky sort.
  • Wonderful animation is wonderful.
  • This is not the Ed Norton flick that competed with THE PRESTIGE so many years ago. Please do not confuse the two.

Why We’re Gonna Watch:
French director/writer Sylvain Chomet of THE TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE fame is directing again. After viewing the trailer for THE ILLUSIONIST we considered renaming the film THANK GOD FOR SYLVAIN CHOMET. All signs hint to this being a genius of animation that puts Disney to shame…again.

‘I’ve lived all over the place,” says the great French animator Sylvain Chomet, “but I seem to do well in countries that need their independence.”

Seriously, this guy is fast becoming our new animation hero.

When’s it coming?
ILLUSIONIST has already released in France and several other countries. It’s about to drop in the UK. It won’t hit the US until December. And that will be just a limited release.

Life remains unfair.

Did we say that a little bit of magic died? One door closes and another opens. In the world of Waves and Twitters, nothing stays constant for long.

Eiko Kadono Ends the Tale of “Kiki’s Delivery Service”

This is a little story that involves a witch. The final book in the series known as “Kiki’s Delivery Service” has been published.

Kiki's_Delivery_Service_Screenshot_01_Kiki_and_Jiji_flying_by_clocktower“I was sad when I wrote ‘The End.’ But the end is a beginning. Each reader will probably continue the tale,” Kadono says.

In the first book, Kiki is a 13-year-old witch who goes on a journey by herself. In the final book she is the mother of two 13-year-old twins, worrying about her children as they prepare to depart on their own journey. Many readers say they are disappointed to see an end to the series. The 74-year-old writer says she wanted to finish the series while she could.

[…]
In the books, Kiki faces various difficulties — relationship problems, failure at her job — and faces them not with magic but with a true heart.

“She’s just got one magical power (flying on a broomstick), so she can’t solve her problems easily, which made it fun to write. Everybody’s got one magical power,” the author says.

In the gloaming of the 1990s a birthday gift from a friend, and co-worker, fell into our greedy hands. Kiki’s Delivery Service directed by Hayao Miyazaki, it read. The movie accepted with a raised eyebrow and conflicting emotions, we wondered if our friend had quietly gone insane. The concern was misplaced. After sitting on the shelf for more weeks than we care to admit, we watched the film and fell in love with Kiki and the directing talents of Miyazaki. We never doubted that friend’s taste in movies again…except for that one movie.

We never crossed paths with the manga. The strength of the movie was enough to stir bittersweet feelings about the manga’s ending. It’s as if a little bit of magic is leaving the world.

The “Magic Mirror” Maps Our Muscles

magicmirrormachine
above: the mirror in 3 parts
(3rd part purely hypothetical)

Researchers at the University of Tokyo have developed a computerized, sensor-based “magic mirror” that analyzes muscular activity and shows real-time computer-generated images of how hard the user’s muscles are being worked while exercising.

The Pink Tentacle article continues in-depth. They talk muscle mapping data, benefits to medical science, and increasing general health performance. All we saw was: Build better robots. Make them like us. Give them plans.

All of this research originates from Tokyo, of course.

Stan Winston (1946 – 2008)

Stan Winston, the Oscar-winning special-effects artist who created the animatronic dinosaurs in “Jurassic Park,” the slimy 14-foot alien queen in “Aliens” and the liquid-metal assassin in “Terminator 2,” died Sunday at his home in Malibu, Calif. He was 62.

[…]

Although he created some of the most famous special effects in movie history, Mr. Winston insisted that he cared less about technical wizardry than he did about storytelling. “It’s not about technology,” he once said. “It’s about writers writing wonderful stories with fantastic characters and me being able to create a visual image that’s beyond what you would expect.”
