God’s Wife Almost Edited Out of the Bible…. Almost
Posted by mistergroonk in Books, History on April 7, 2011
We’ll let Discovery News carry the weight of this report.
Asherah’s connection to Yahweh, according to Stavrakopoulou, is spelled out in both the Bible and an 8th century B.C. inscription on pottery found in the Sinai desert at a site called Kuntillet Ajrud.
“The inscription is a petition for a blessing,” she shares. “Crucially, the inscription asks for a blessing from ‘Yahweh and his Asherah.’ Here was evidence that presented Yahweh and Asherah as a divine pair. And now a handful of similar inscriptions have since been found, all of which help to strengthen the case that the God of the Bible once had a wife.”

Asherah — known across the ancient Near East by various other names, such as Astarte and Istar — was “an important deity, one who was both mighty and nurturing,” Wright continued.“Many English translations prefer to translate ‘Asherah’ as ‘Sacred Tree,'” Wright said. “This seems to be in part driven by a modern desire, clearly inspired by the Biblical narratives, to hide Asherah behind a veil once again.”
“Mentions of the goddess Asherah in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) are rare and have been heavily edited by the ancient authors who gathered the texts together,” Aaron Brody, director of the Bade Museum and an associate professor of Bible and archaeology at the Pacific School of Religion, said.

Watch: Jesus 2000, “He Died for Our Spins”

A daily visit to Whitechapel’s October on the Net led us to Jesus 2000. A quick search later we learn there are two videos featuring J2K, the original and the remix, and the videos are a part of Wizzdesign’s marketing reel.
All of that is gravy because the vids themselves are digital love.

Stephen Hawking Ruffles Feathers and Remains Future-Fearful
Posted by mistergroonk in Books, Interviews, Space, The Future on September 2, 2010
Earlier this morning for some reason, Stephen Hawking upset some people with his Burly Man words.
Stephen Hawking says universe not created by God
God did not create the universe, the man who is arguably Britain’s most famous living scientist says in a forthcoming book.In the new work, The Grand Design, Professor Stephen Hawking argues that the Big Bang, rather than occurring following the intervention of a divine being, was inevitable due to the law of gravity.
In his 1988 book, A Brief History of Time, Hawking had seemed to accept the role of God in the creation of the universe. But in the new text, co-written with American physicist Leonard Mlodinow, he said new theories showed a creator is “not necessary”.
Stephen Hawking just declared that Gravity is God!
See what we did there?
We have some notes for those so ready to jump on Professor Hawking’s words and shout across the world because you think you need to be heard, too.
Religious right. Calm down. Just because one brilliant scientist aired his beliefs about the universe and everything in it does not mean it invalidates your faith in whatever. Not everyone has to believe what you believe for it to be valid.
Atheists. Settle down. The universe, and multi-verse, is a big place. It’s where we keep all our stuff. There’s no need to get all culty, know-it-all, froth at the mouth and point fingers while dancing the I-told-you-so dance. There’s bound to be something out there that challenges you straight to your mortal core. Want to lay odds on that thing being unexplainable?
There’s no reason for science and religion to exist separately. Others far wiser than our humble self have postulated on this. We don’t have it all figured out any more than you. (Though at times you’d be hard pressed to believe that.) There’s no filling a cup that’s already full. (Stop those snarky typing fingers. That phrase did exist before James Cameron thought to throw it into AVATAR. )
Are your feathers unruffled now? Good.
Now look below to let Stephen Hawking freak-out your future.
In Ohio: Lightning Burns 6-Story Jesus to Ground, God Investigated as Cause
Posted by mistergroonk in USA on June 15, 2010
Great balls of fire!
The “King of Kings” statue, one of southwest Ohio’s most familiar landmarks, had stood since 2004 at the evangelical Solid Rock Church along Interstate 75 in Monroe, just north of Cincinnati.
The lightning strike set the statue ablaze around 11:15 p.m. Monday, Monroe police dispatchers said.
The sculpture, about 62 feet tall and 40 feet wide at the base, showed Jesus from the torso up and was nicknamed Touchdown Jesus because of the way the arms were raised, similar to a referee signaling a touchdown. It was made of plastic foam and fiberglass over a steel frame, which is all that remained Tuesday.
Hold on.
Wait!
There’s a message here.
And that message is…
“It will be back, but this time we are going to try for something fireproof,” she said.
Of course. Yes.
That’s it.
Clearly.

Station Break: Taking a Rest from Serious Business
Posted by mistergroonk in Admin, Intertube Madness, LOL on February 24, 2010
It has been decided, faithful reader, that we need a short rest from the Internet at large. Expect our return to the Newsmine in first week of March.
Twitter ramblings will still happen @Groonk.
While we’re gone, examine these Internet artifacts. Then observe and report:
Tuesday Tease: CREATION, Making Charles Darwin Sexy
Posted by mistergroonk in Movies, Science, Trailers on January 12, 2010
CREATION is a part biography, part fictionalized account of Charles “Origin of the Species” Darwin‘s relationship with his eldest daughter Annie. As you see in the trailer, it seems Darwin’s wife, Emma, played by the lovely Jennifer Connelly, isn’t down with that science business.
Is it just us or is Jennifer Connelly making a career off of being the wife of the Person Famous for Doing/Making/Creating Whatever?
We suppose it’s a stable gig if you can get it. here’s a suggestion. Why not play Madam Curie, Madam de Pompador, Amelie Earhart, or a Czarina for a change? Just sayin’, Ms Connelly. Take back the leads.
Trending Bits: P Diddy is Scared of His TV. Kayne West Remains a Fool.
Posted by mistergroonk in Intertube Madness, Television, Twitter on September 14, 2009
Trends are a hard thing to capture even before the Internet LOL’d at cats committing crazy antics. Now that Twitter is “famous” insanity barely describes the random “trending topics” that rear their ferret-y little heads from day to day. What was going to be a post about mis-aimed religion transformed into a post about TV influencing the series of tubes fodder – again.
Because Lucifer Knows That Twitter is Devilish
In a nutshell, SUPERNATURAL is: The Hardy Boys fighting real ghosts and demons. Over the years it’s gone from battling things that go bump in the night to parrying with full fledged demons. Last season turned all that upside down by introducing angels into the mix. It was just a matter of time before Lucifer Morningstar would enter the fray to raise the stakes to apocalyptic levels. This is exactly what happened last Thursday at 8 PM CDT.
Supernatural fans began trending the Twitter hashtag #luciferiscoming, to build interest in this long awaited season premiere. This digital roots tactic was successful but because some people jump to conclusions before having the facts tied down, all hell broke loose. Only not literally.
After #luciferiscoming and #supernatural got to first and second position on the trending topics list. Despite fans posting links to Supernatural sites, some other Tweeters were unaware of the reason for the #luciferiscoming tag and thinking Satanists were at work started responding with messages about Jesus and God.
A full blown religious conflict broke out when Rapper Puff Daddy (@iamdiddy who has over a million followers), unaware of the context of #luciferiscoming, started a #Godishere tweet in retaliation. Twitter stopped posts with tags including both God and Lucifer from appearing in trending topics. Fans continued to use #supernatural and #inkripkewetrust, and both also reached high on the list.
Just before the show aired Misha Collins joined the game, suggesting fans used #PDIDDYISSCAREDOFHISTV.
And this is how actor Misha Collins became our new favorite person on Twitter.
Dolphins are, in Fact, Not Building a Religion
Posted by mistergroonk in Animals, Science on March 24, 2009
A curious thing has entered our thought processes.
THAT a complex mind is required for religion may explain why faith is unique to humans. Now brain scans support this idea, revealing that the parts of the brain that process religious belief are those that evolved most recently and give us sophisticated cognition.
Ancient Tablet Hints Death/Ressurection Not Unique to the Messiah
Posted by mistergroonk in History on July 9, 2008
Which is something I’ve come to know for some time now. Gilgamesh, anyone?
The fact that this tablet was found in an area of interest, well that may add a new wrinkle to things.
A three-foot-tall tablet with 87 lines of Hebrew that scholars believe dates from the decades just before the birth of Jesus is causing a quiet stir in biblical and archaeological circles, especially because it may speak of a messiah who will rise from the dead after three days.
If such a messianic description really is there, it will contribute to a developing re-evaluation of both popular and scholarly views of Jesus, since it suggests that the story of his death and resurrection was not unique but part of a recognized Jewish tradition at the time.

It was in Cathedra that Israel Knohl, an iconoclastic professor of Bible studies at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, first heard of the stone, which Ms. Yardeni and Mr. Elitzur dubbed “Gabriel’s Revelation,” also the title of their article. Mr. Knohl posited in a book published in 2000 the idea of a suffering messiah before Jesus, using a variety of rabbinic and early apocalyptic literature as well as the Dead Sea Scrolls. But his theory did not shake the world of Christology as he had hoped, partly because he had no textual evidence from before Jesus.
