I was shopping Best Buy for canned air of the non-breathable variety. Before I left, I breezed by the anime section to see what new DVDs they’re pushing. Call it a personal quirk or call it obsessive compulsive but I can’t leave Best Buy without at least glancing over their anime. I also can’t leave Barnes and Noble without buying a chai and Target is helpless against my Sprite buying powers.
Scratching this store’s particular OCD itch revealed to me something called Kino’s Journey. I made a mental note and just nowgoogled for a review. Kino looks pretty darn interesting:
Kino is what’s known as a Traveler, a proper “profession” of sorts, someone who journeys throughout the various countries of the world. Kino’s particular rule is to never stay more than three days in a country before moving on. That amount of time is just enough to get a real feel for a country, plus if you stay longer that’s time not spent in another place. Each country has its own set of rules and laws, but there are some basic ones that apply to Travelers. The most obvious is that they’re not supposed to cause trouble after they check into a town. They have to respect the laws of that land.
They sold me on the whole traveler-is-a-profession angle. The rest of the review is slightly spoilerish but worth it to learn more about the series. Apparently, Kino shares teh same director as Serial Experiments Lain. One of the few anime’s I’ve watched and know there’s deeper meaning creeping about inside it but I never latched on to it like so many others have. I’m betting Kino will be similar but I gotta see it anyway.
Damn, I need money.
