Posted by mistergroonk in Art, Artist, Dinosaurs, Robots on July 29, 2010
Last week, Nomad Tofu cartoonist Harry Myland ran a Stream Monster Ustream. We were lucky enough to witness the event and suggest a sketch for tonight.
HARRY: What should I draw?
GROONK: A robot riding a dinosaur!
And then he made this happen.
And then we were very pleased.

Flashback to Before The Internet: Underground Comix
Posted by mistergroonk in Art, Comics, Flickrlicious, Panel Perfect on July 7, 2010
Some time ago, SciFi Wire reported:
The underground comix of the ’60s and ’70s were NSFW long before any of us had ever heard of NSFW. Often available only in head shops, these alternative publications delivered a dose of sex, drugs and violence then missing from mainstream comic books.

Art-Out Moments: The Remake/Remodel Experience Re-imagined, 2000AD Cover Edition

Warren Ellis is a harsh taskmaster. He works you harder in order to entertain his whiskey drenched soul. Warren Ellis is the fire that tempers you into a double-edged blade of art genius.
For example, take his Remake/Remodel series.
There was, way back in the mists of… 2007… a recurrent meme among several comics art blogs. Reclaiming characters from their owners, I guess it could be broadly described as… people were reimagining abused characters (chiefly Supergirl) as artistic call-and-response various places, chiefly LiveJournal. In the aftermath of that, I did a similar thing on old messageboard The Engine, called REMAKE/REMODEL. They were embraced as technical exercises, bits of fun, ways to get the brain moving.
After years on this track, the steam began to run out. Now Remake/Remodel has been re-imagined. New rules grace the Whitechapel threads weekly. A few weeks ago, this happened:
You are an artist/designer. You have to put together the cover for the first issue of a weekly science-fiction anthology comic called 2000AD.
You don’t know much about what’s in it. You’ve been given the following pieces of information to include on the cover somehow:
“featuring the new DAN DARE”
“M.A.C.H. 1 – his incredible hyperpower will amaze you!”
“SPACE-AGE DINOSAURS! Read ‘FLESH’ ”
“STOP PRESS! GREAT BRITAIN INVADED!”
The images that followed both astounded and amazed.
That was @MichaelFurious‘ interpretation. We’ve posted a handful of others below the cut. For all the images in their full sized glory visit the now closed thread on Whitechapel: CHINESE WHISPERS UCHRONAL COVER REMODEL: 2000AD Prog 1
