Live Blog of Irene

New Yorkers awoke Sunday morning to torrential rains, heavy winds and fears that Hurricane Irene would carve a path of destruction through the city.

But by the afternoon the worst was over, and even the worst was not as bad as had been predicted. Irene was downgraded to a tropical storm, and while some parts of the city were flooded, the storm surge was far less intense than it was expected to be.
