Kirk McElhearn has translated and posted two chapters from Pierre Bordage’s novel The Warriors of Silence. Bordage is one of the best-selling non-English-language sf writers in the world, with 20 novels to his credit, widely translated into languages other than English. McElhearn hopes that in posting these chapters, he’ll stir interest in the US and UK for Bordage’s work

How to find malware in Windows

A good guide to find all the places in a Windows installation that a worm or virus can hide:

2. REGISTRY. Windows executes all instructions in the “Run” section of the Windows Registry. Items in the “Run” section (and in other parts of the Registry listed below) can be programs or files that programs open (documents), as explained in No. 1 above.

3. REGISTRY. Windows executes all instructions in the “RunServices” section of the Registry.

4. REGISTRY. Windows executes all instructions in the “RunOnce” part of the Registry.

Buffalo Combats Street Violence

As I hear it, the translation should be, “Thou shalt not murder.”

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) – A funeral director uses billboards to warn against becoming his “guest of honor.” Sports heroes and business leaders offer up a boxing ring.

With the death toll on the city’s streets climbing, members of the community are taking matters into their own hands to stop the violence.

“At some point this has to stop,” said Rudolphus Boanes Jr., vice chairman of the three-month-old Stop the Violence coalition, comprising seven community organizations with names like 100 Mighty Men, Mad Dads and Back to Basics.

Boanes’ brother was murdered some 10 years ago, shot and wrapped in a blanket and left on a Buffalo street for a month. Boanes understands the impulse for revenge, but has shown up at crime scenes to urge restraint.

“The first thing they want to do is retaliate because they’re hurting,” Boanes said. “If it was a loved one, one of the first things you want to do is get revenge and you have to be mindful of that.”

The coalition plans to rally at City Hall next month to urge police to bring back its dedicated homicide unit, saying too many killings are going unpunished. The homicide and robbery squads recently were consolidated into a single Major Crimes unit to save money.

The Brian K. Lewis Funeral home, whose business is brisk with homicide victims, has taken a different approach. Its billboards feature an open casket and a hand holding a gun with the message: “Stop the killing or be the guest of honor.”
