It has won multiple sci-fi awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It has a cult following<\/a> that rivals Wars and Trek. You doubt this? Next sci-fi convention you attend(or mock if that’s what’s blowing up your skirt these days) be sure to run a tally of Vulcan ears and Stormtroopers vs. the sheer amount of Jayne Hats<\/a>. The answer may surprise you. <\/p>\n

It also has a permanent residence in space<\/a>! The International Space Station to be exact. Low earth orbit to be even exact-er.<\/p>\n

What we’re talking about is the oft-lamented, killed by Fox TV executives, science fiction western epic that is Firefly<\/a><\/em>. Just yesterday we learned this shiny ‘verse is set to fly the skies of cable television again. Sure it’ll be re-runs of a show that any proper Browncoat already owns on DVD or Blu Ray. But The Science Channel<\/a> is adding the extra wrinkle of Dr. Michio Kaku discussing how the show’s sci-fi matches with real science. There’s nothing like a popular physicist pointing out that line between real and fantasy we always say.<\/p>\n

If I got $300 million from the California Lottery, the first thing I would do is buy the rights to Firefly, make it own my own, and distribute it on the Internet.<\/a><\/p>\n

\nNathan Fillion: It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a great question. We\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re the most story-literate society the world has ever seen. What Joss tends to do is twist story conventions into reality. Whereas the story goes like this, real life goes like this, and that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s what Joss has mastered.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\nThe Plan:<\/p>\n

Phase 1) Generate momentum. We\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re going to setup a way people can pledge funding towards the mission of putting the rights to Firefly back into the hands of people who care about it. Since Nathan said he\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d be game to be those hands, we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re going to watch for \u00e2\u20ac\u00a6<\/p>\n

Phase 2) Nathan chimes in towards us and approves the effort. At that point, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a real mission and we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll switch into\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6<\/p>\n

Phase 3) We\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll setup a way for the funding to be collected into a Non-Profit Organization. We\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll then want everyone to make good on their pledge and contribute.<\/p>\n

Throughout all of this, we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll have up the running tally of pledges and actuals.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

UPDATE:<\/strong> Thankfully Maurissa Tancharoen, Dr Horrible <\/em>and Dollhouse <\/em>writer tweeted <\/a>that the Whedonverse does not back the Help Nathan Buy Firefly movement. We say “thankfully” because there are a lot of better causes <\/a>that deserve that kind of money.<\/p>\n
