Our Strange Sky: Photos of Mystery Missile Launch Alarms Californians, Stirs Debate

Pentacleus informed us of a strange sighting of the California coast just a day ago. With a little doing, we tracked down a handful of articles focusing on the weirdness. Here’s a bit from Daily tech:

The event alarmed many in the public. Visible in the skies over LA, the site triggered many to call emergency hotlines or local defense phone lines.

The mystery has deepened as sources at the Pentagon claim to know nothing of the missile. Stated Pentagon spokesman Col. Dave Lapan, “Nobody within the Department of Defense that we’ve reached out to has been able to explain what this contrail is, where it came from… It does seem implausible, and that’s why at this point the operative term is ‘unexplained’. Nobody … within the Department of Defense that we’ve reached out to has been able to explain what this contrail is.”

Col. Lapan indicated a private contractor might be responsible. California is a hotbed of the aerospace industry, and test launches are commonplace, coming from offshore boats or platforms. Typically, though, someone is informed.

Well either this is not typical or someone forgot we live in the 21st century. A time filled with digital cameras and instant information.

Video of the report and extra conjecture under the jump.

Foreign Indie Tease: NORWEGIAN NINJA. Buckle Up. Be One of Us.

From the depths of the Cold War we learn that Norway had ninja.

No really.

Official Synopsis

Thomas Malling’s Kommandør Treholt & Ninjatroppen is the true story of how Commander Arne Treholt and his Ninja Force saved Norway during the Cold War. The story takes place in the time right before Treholt’s arrest on espionage charges in 1984, and reveals a spectacularly different version of our recent past than has been previously known.

What We Learned:
Those bastards think they’re stronger than America? Surely the cold has gotten to them.

Movie buffs should take a gander at the Old School 3D blog entry. They used classic Tron techniques to build an 80s 3D effect. All we know is, it looks a damn sight better than the CLASH OF THE TITANS remake.

Why We’re Gonna Watch:
We honestly can’t say why we’re gonna watch. It looks like an experiment in the absurd yet, everything we read says it’s based off true events. Loosely based, sure. The idea of living in a world where Norway has ninja frightens and fascinates us. Maybe that’s reason enough.

When’s it coming?
Norway gets it on August 13, 2010. No idea when it’ll hit the USA.
