DID YOU KNOW: Tigers Can Strike Underwater
Son of a bitch, are you kidding me?
Six years old, and at the prime of his life, Odin lives at the Six Flags Discovery Kingdom Zoo in Vallejo, near San Francisco. He is about 10ft long from nose to tail, and is an excellent swimmer.
Odin learned to swim by diving after meat chunks. Are you seeing this? Zoologosts, hear me. We do not need fearsome, yet majestic, creatures learning new mediums in which to hunt.

BEHOLD: First Photo of Earth from Space...
...or To See the World through a Grainy Lens.
On October 24, 1946, not long after the end of World War II and years before the Sputnik satellite opened the space age, a group of soldiers and scientists in the New Mexico desert saw something new and wonderful—the first pictures of Earth as seen from space.
The grainy, black-and-white photos were taken from an altitude of 65 miles by a 35-millimeter motion picture camera riding on a V-2 missile launched from the White Sands Missile Range. Snapping a new frame every second and a half, the rocket-borne camera climbed straight up, then fell back to Earth minutes later, slamming into the ground at 500 feet per second. The camera itself was smashed, but the film, protected in a steel cassette, was unharmed.
Fred Rulli was a 19-year-old enlisted man assigned to the recovery team that drove into the desert to retrieve film from those early V-2 shots. When the scientists found the cassette in good shape, he recalls, "They were ecstatic, they were jumping up and down like kids." Later, back at the launch site, "when they first projected [the photos] onto the screen, the scientists just went nuts."

Jesusland is Rotting
Back in the day, around about late 1980s, Jim Bakker had the wonderful idea of starting up a funland where christians can go and have a wholesome good time. I actually remember seeing it on the news when it opened.
Look at it now:
You know, he could have used that spacious land to open a homeless shelter or provided a place for families down on their luck to live at relatively low prices. Instead he built a theme park designed to leech money from those who had money to burn.
Hell, the land still could be used for something like that now.
But I digress.
A photographer walked into Jesusland and took tons of photos.

Look...Up in the Sky!
Flipped through Astronomy Picture of the Day's month of October. Two wicked awesome pictures were found:
Moon Lightning

Moonsets are not often quite as exciting as this one. But amateur astronomer Marc-Andre Besel was impressed by the brilliant lighting displays that joined the first quarter Moon and stars of the constellation Scorpius in western skies. On August 22, 2004, his view looked across the Gulf of Mexico from Anna Maria Island, Florida, USA, a region that would experience even more stormy weather in the coming days
Contrails

Artificial clouds made by humans may become so common they change the Earth's climate. The long thin cloud streaks that dominate the above satellite photograph of Georgia are contrails, cirrus clouds created by airplanes. The exhaust of an airplane engine can create a contrail by saturating the surrounding air with extra moisture.
Click the pics for more info on each.

Hubble sees 'planet' around star
via DPH
![]()
The "planet", 5-10 times the mass of Jupiter, is orbiting a small white dwarf star about 100 light-years away.
Astronomers are being cautious, saying they require more data to be sure it really is a planet and not a background object caught in the same field of view.
Confirmation will come if follow-up observations can show the planet and the star moving together through space.
Over the past 10 years, scientists have discovered more than 120 so-called exoplanets. However, all have been found by indirect methods - none was photographed directly.

Man Survive nail gun mishap
via 7d
A construction worker had six nails driven into his head in an accident with a high-powered nail gun, but doctors said Wednesday they expect him to make a full recovery.[...]
Mejia, 39, was building a home when he fell from the roof onto a co-worker who was using the nail gun on the second floor, Los Angeles County sheriff's Deputy Mark Newlands said.
The two men tried to grab each to keep from falling, but both tumbled to the ground. At some point, the nail gun discharged and drove the nails into Mejia's head.
"They're extremely powerful," Newlands said. "They've got to drive through three-quarter-inch (two centimeter) plywood."
Three nails penetrated Mejia's brain, and one entered his spine below the base of his skull. Doctors said the nails barely missed his brain stem and spinal cord, preventing paralysis or death.
"We did not have too much hope that he would survive, but we did it and he survived," Quinonez said.
Five nails were removed the same day and the sixth, in Mejia's face, was removed April 23 after swelling went down, the hospital said.
Doctors expect him to fully recover after undergoing rehabilitation therapy.
Authorities cleared the co-worker of any wrongdoing.
