Anime Director, Satoshi Kon ( 1963 – 2010 )

The universe remains an unfair ‘verse. We just learned of anime director Satoshi Kon‘s passing via Twitch.

Satoshi Kon worked on several anime classics under Katsuhiro Otomo and Mamoru Oshii, but is most well-known for his own films released by Madhouse: “Perfect Blue”, “Millennium Actress”, “Tokyo Godfathers” and of course “Paprika”. He also made the brilliant 13-episode series “Paranoia Agent”. Currently he was working on his new film “The Dreaming Machine” which was scheduled for release next year.

Kon’s genius will be sorely missed.

Synopsis
The Winchester boys finally get a chance to fight demons without budgetary constraints.

What We Learned:
Thirty-four seconds is not enough.

Why We’re Gonna Watch:
SUPERNATURAL is a guilty pleasure. Watching what is essentially The Hardy Boys with Demons grow and flourish over the years has been a treat. It makes us wonder where the Nancy Drew with Ghosts counterpart has been hiding. Unless that’s what Buffy the Vampire Slayer has been all along.

When’s it coming?

Warner Home Video will ship Supernatural the Animation on Blu-ray and DVD in Japan in two boxes on January 12 and April 6, 2011.

First Trailer for SPACE PIRATE CAPTAIN HARLOCK Hits Internet, Makes Life Worth Living

Official Synopsis

In the future, Mankind has achieved a vast starfaring civilization, but is slowly and steadily succumbing to ennui or despair, often due to defeat and subjugation by a foreign invader. Rising against the general apathy, Harlock denies defeat and leads an outlaw crew aboard his starship Arcadia to undertake daring raids against Earth’s oppressors.

What We Learned:
CG animated skull adorned space pirate ships look kinda sexy. This is what all future space battles should strive to beat. The Most Common Superpower is effective as ever.

Hats off to the sneaky 2010 Tokyo International Anime Fair attendee who captured this pilot trailer and… um… pirated uploaded to all the Internet in order to show how cool he is glorify the awesomeness of this coming movie.

Why We’re Gonna Watch:
We have not seen a full episode or read the manga to Space Pirate Captain Harlock.Having admitted this, we do know the importance of creator , and anime legend, Leiji Matsumoto‘s work. Some of you causal anime fans, and brazen Daft Punk fans, might notice the animation style looking a bit familiar. Maybe you should check out the Wikipedia article for the music movie Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem.

For future reference, we rate the excitement level for the Harlock movie two points above the Space Battleship Yamato movie.

Yes, this looks that wonderful.

When’s it coming?
2012 is the best date we can scrounge up.

Official site:
All we have for now is the Wikipedia site.

SUPERNATURAL Anime is a Go, How Long Until Sam and Dean Fight “Naughty Tentacles”?

It’s Thursday and we’re missing Supernatural.

Yuya Uchida (Soul Eater’s Dr. Franken Stein, Naruto Shippūden’s Rinji) will dub the role of Sam, while Hiroki Touchi (Trinity Blood’s Abel Nightroad, Bokurano’s Kokkpelli) will dub the role of Dean. Both actors dubbed these same roles for the live-action version in Japanese.

Also, we haven’t talked anime in a while. It’s nice to solve a problem of two birds with one stone.

At the Rising Con Spain 2010, Jensen and Jared confirmed the project and that they’d seen and approved the artwork for Sam and Dean. They also said they would voice the first couple of English language episodes.

The Winchester brothers (Sam and Dean) will be designed to look like the original actual actors (Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki). Sub characters: e.g. John, Bobby, Mary, Jessica etc. will be designed in a completely new way to give fresh impression. Enemies (Creatures, Demon and Ghosts) will be given a cool design taking full advantage of Japanese anime expression.

When’s it coming?
January 2011.

From Japan: SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMATO Graces the Internet with Live-Action Trailer, Looks Cool

Official Synopsis

The crew of the Space Battleship Yamato set out on a journey to the planet Iscandar to acquire a device that can heal the ravaged Earth.

What We Learned:
Anime connoisseurs in the USA call it Star Blazers. The Japanese know it from the 70s as Space Battleship Yamato. We’re calling it a space opera epic begging to be seen.

Why We’re Gonna Watch:
The gauge for the melodrama is likely to break on this one. But we’re gonna have to choke back our natural revulsion for such theatrics. It’s a battleship cruising the spaceways on a mission to save the world. Watching it is an imperative.

When’s it coming?
They say December 2010 in Japan.
