2 for Tuesday Tease: And…AWAY WE GO

And the road trip for pregnant new families begins.

Sam Mendes director of AMERICAN BEAUTY and JARHEAD(how’s that for range?) now brings to the screen AWAY WE GO. These quirky little movies used to be our bread and butter untill every body and their sister decided they wanted to be a “quirky little movie,” too. If only the others decided to be good as well. An unknown factor permeates the trailer for AWG. That x-factor. That thing that makes it more interesting than all the rest.

Closer inspection reveals that factor’s origin:

Longtime (and now thirtysomething) couple Burt (John Krasinski) and Verona (Maya Rudolph) are going to have a baby. The pregnancy progresses smoothly, but six months in, the pair is put off and put out by the cavalierly delivered news from Burt’s parents Jerry and Gloria (Jeff Daniels and Catherine O’Hara) that the eccentric elder Farlanders are moving out of Colorado – thereby eliminating the expectant couple’s main reason for living there.

The folly of moving into your parents’ city just to be next to them only to find they’ve grown a wild hair and are moving away from you has finally been documented. Please recall that we are a cynical lot these days, months, years and tend to acquire perverse pleasure in news that family has screwed up your plans yet again. Plus, for you THE OFFICE fans, John Krasinki sporting a rather fashionable beard.

AWAY WE GO is currently in limited release. And by limited we mean holy crap will this thing ever hit the sleepy town of Huntsville unscathed or will we have to wait for the eventual HBO showing.
