Our Strange Sky: Lightning and a Lunar Eclipse from the Edge of the Planet of Goats

June 29th, 2011 No comments

Thunderstorms almost spoiled this view of the spectacular June 15 total lunar eclipse. Instead, storm clouds parted for 10 minutes during the total eclipse phase and lightning bolts contributed to the dramatic sky. Captured with a 30 second exposure the scene also inspired what, in the 16 year history of Astronomy Picture of the Day, the editor considers may be the best title yet for a picture (title credit to Chris K.). Of course, the lightning reference clearly makes sense, and the shadow play of the dark lunar eclipse was widely viewed across planet Earth in Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. The picture itself, however, was shot from the Greek island of Ikaria at Pezi. That area is known as “the planet of the goats” because of the rough terrain and strange looking rocks.

The Sunday Punch: Matt Smith is Batman Now. Vengeance is cool.

June 26th, 2011 No comments

The 11th Doctor, Matt Smith, as Batman?! Do go on…

the British actor was playing a comedic Batman over the weekend for an event called 24 Hour Plays (the plays are written the night before by various playwrights, then the actors have only a day of rehearsals before going live on stage) in Santa Monica, Calif.

So Mr Smith is stretching his legs and giving it the Hollywood try, eh? Good on ya, mate.

All the plays in the event are written the night before by various playwrights.

The actors then spend just one day rehearsing before performing it.

At the start of his play – called Gotham Autopsy – Smith was covered in a sheet in a mortuary before he came to life as a confused Batman. Comedian and Don’t Mess With Zohan star Nick Swardson starred as Robin. Also in his play was Kick Ass star Lyndsy Fonseca and fellow Brit Saffron Burrows. Half-way through the 20 minute skit Smith dropped his fake American accent and became a cockney to huge laughs from the audience.

This 24 Hour Plays thing sounds like a neat theater event somewhat unique to the LA scene. Where else would you see The Doctor as Batman, Eva Mendes dressed as a pumpkin or movie Fantastic Four’s Reed Richards(aka Ioan Gruffudd) on stage in a yellow polka dot bikini ?

No, really. That happened.

Saturday Afternoon Theater: THAT MOVIE SHOW: THE MOVIE, Feature Length for Your Pleasure

June 25th, 2011 No comments

Official Synopsis

That Movie Show – The Feature Length Version (1 hour, 45 minutes)
This video collects all 20 episodes of “That Movie Show” which was produced for MTV Networks’ site: NextMovie.com. This is the same re-edited & uncensored version that played on the big screen in Los Angeles on June 7th.

Why We’re Watching: Our affection for Bobby Miller’s off-beat comedy style began in 2009 when he was a part of Indy Mogul. Back then he was running a short film review show called THE BEST SHORT FILMS IN THE WORLD. In case you missed it, here’s where we covered that on our Bits.

Not too long after that, THE REEL GOOD SHOW appeared with the same quirky style. This time the focus was not burgeoning short films. This time Miller was the host of a comedy show that interviewed the short filmmakers in the most offbeat manner possible. It’s like Zach Galifinakis’ BETWEEN TWO FERNS only funny and two years ahead of that Funny or Die darling.

MTV sounded the siren call and beckoned young Bobby Miller to go west and develop web series content for their movie site Next Movie.com. Here THAT MOVIE SHOW was born to interview more filmmaker celebrities and promote upcoming movies in Miller’s own unique style. Sadly the new show was put to rest after two seasons. unsadly, Miller and company re-edited the footage into a feature length and uncensored film.

We’re definitely looking forward to what @BobbyMiller and his new Hollywood peeps fire into the unsuspecting Internets.

Here we see the second time we have been happy to see a Silurian in the Whoniverse.

For the first time please reference the inter-species lesbian Victorian detective couple from the Dr Who mid-season cliffhanger, “A Good Man Goes to War.”
