Remake/Remodel Watch: Coming Soon on HBO, Aquaman!

April 27th, 2011 No comments

Let’s face it, we’re gonna need something stellar to wash the taste of ENTOURAGE out of our brains. GAME OF THRONES is one helluva good start, that’s for sure. Why not get ahead of the game on good TV? Sorry, we meant HBO.*

So your INSTRUCTIONS are:

Design a publicity poster for an adaptation of the DC Comics property AQUAMAN — for HBO. HBO is the home of DEADWOOD, THE WIRE, THE SOPRANOS, ROME, BOARDWALK EMPIRE, you know the score… and therefore you know their stable of showrunners, people like David Simon and David Milch… and the sort of material they do.

The HBO version of AQUAMAN.

We jumped in on the ground floor of this challenge. Paul Sizer has yet to throw his weighty pen around the forum. Be sure to revisit all this week for more submissions.

Pia Guerra made a beautiful statement with few words:

Always remember, Remake/Remodels are meant to be wild reinterpretations of beloved, or silly, characters.

Waves from the ‘Verse: River Tam and the Fireflies for Sale on Etsy,

April 27th, 2011 No comments
She can kill you with her songs. Also, her mind.

Our attention to this was captured by the TeeFury newsletter in our email last week. The shirt is currently not buyable.

The prints, however, are!

If you mosey on over to Joebot’s Etsy you may be able to buy one of the few left.

(Or you can buy one for us. Our wall is cold and lacks the proper amount of Firefly love.)

Music Break: Rocky & ED-209 & Peter Serafinowicz & “Open Your Eyes”

April 26th, 2011 No comments

Remember when music videos were about telling 3 minute stories? Don’t strain your brains too hard. This happened back when MTV still showed videos. No one’s quite sure what point in time that actually occurred. Hell, even The Doctor would have trouble pinpointing that moment with his miraculous TARDIS.

Back to the point: music videos with a story to tell. Here’s a video for the song “Open Your Eyes” by Alex Metric. This thing is packed full of callbacks and awesome and genius. In it, Rocky is challenged by OCP’s very own ED-209. We can’t wait for “Open Your Eyes II” when a jetpack enabled RoboCop steps up for a bit of action.

The video was directed by Peter Serfinowicz. That’s the guy doing a damn convincing Rocky Balboa in this video. Serafinowicz was the fellow responsible for the damn hilarious LOOK AROUND YOU [Adult Swim] once had in heavy rotation.

BTW, @Serfinowicz is totally followable on the Twitter. You would do well to bless yourself with his funny thoughts and links.

Tuesday Tease: Duke Nukem Forever, The NSFW Trailer that Took 12 Years to Make

April 26th, 2011 No comments

Official Synopsis: Aliens have landed. They’ve mutated the police. They’ve come for our women. Ash Williams Duke Nukem is here to stop all of the nonsense and maybe take in a strip show while he’s at it.

What We Learned: It looks like Duke Nukem but the fact it has a release date and no one else is laughing confuses us.

Why We’ll Play: Holy hell. It is 1996 and we’re finally getting used to playing PC games with a mouse. Friends come by the apartment to visit.

“You’ve got to play this game!” they say.

“You kill aliens and pay strippers to get naked!” they howl.

We scoff at their naivete. ‘A video game would never dare be that awesome,’ we think. Aside from that Leisure Suit Larry game our strange college roommate played every day in his locked room, games would never be on the brutally action-flavored side of misogyny.

We failed to realize how wrong we could be.

The copy of Duke Nukem 3D that made its way into our hands and (then)archaic computer consumed every bit of spare time we could muster. After we finished the game, the networked co-op play made sure we stayed indoors for another 3 months.

The news quickly spread that Duke Nukem Forever was coming. We saved up the cash and marked the time until it would appear. Twelve years, and a metric ton of vaporware jokes later, this Duke Nukem Forever NSFW trailer made its way into our eyeballs. And it brought the 12 year old remix of Lo Fidelity Allstars remix of “Battle Flag“(equally NSFW) with it.

This trailer looks like everything we would expect from a Duke Nukem game released in the 21st century. However, we still don’t believe the fucking thing is coming out.

When’s it coming?
June 14, 2011 USA, supposedly.
June 10, 2011 Internationally.

AMERICAN PICKERS Inspires 62 Year-Old Man to Build Car that Runs on Whiskey, Prefers Maker’s Mark

April 26th, 2011 No comments

He ran a snarky crew off his property then proceeded to build a car powered by liquid awesome. Mr Nilsson, you are our hero of the week.

1) First you have the idea.

The idea of doing something with an old still came to him last October, after he had some unusual visitors. The cast of a TV show, American Pickers, Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz, came to try and purchase some of his items for the show. While they did manager to grab an older oil can from Mr. Nilsson, after making a disparaging crack about the use of his still, they were gently encouraged to leave his property, with the help of a fire arm. After a hasty retreat by the crew, Mr. Nilsson began to think about what he could do with that old still.

2) Then you do something about it.

The visit did motivate Nilsson. “After I’d run them off, I kept thinking about what they kept saying to me, ‘what are you going to do with all this stuff, you might as well sell it to us’. Well that left me pondering. Folks around these parts do a lot of pondering, so it wasn’t really nothing new for me as I ponder about something almost everyday. But this time my pondering gave me an idea, watch Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.”

Inspired and motivated by the film, Nilsson spent the next 6 months, in his workshop turning his one-time still and collection of junk into a whiskey sipping motor vehicle. “The car will run on almost any bourbon, but she really purrs on Maker’s Mark” said Nilsson.

The Daily Blam reports that Nissan has made a deal with Nilsson to make a consumer version of the car to be released into the wild in 2014.

Ah, the power of ingenuity.

Now. We need an idea.

Moment of Who: Dinner with The Silence

April 26th, 2011 No comments

This comic directly references the Series 6 premiere of DOCTOR WHO’s “The Impossible Astronaut.” Explaining what’s going on here is on par with explaining the “very funny in-joke” you told your best friend who is standing so far outside the jest that’s s/he is ten feet from the fence of ever fully understanding.

We strongly suggest you watch “The Impossible Astronaut“(hopefully the Crackle video will work for you) or read Kyle Anderson’s spoiler heavy review over on The Nerdist.

Hard-core Whovians are laughing their heads off at this. We know because we are One Of Them.

Thank You, Internet: Iron NASA is Just the Real Life Power Armor(Toy) We Were Looking For

April 22nd, 2011 No comments

Here’s a thing found randomly on the Internet. It poses the question, ‘what if Iron Man were made from NASA parts. This, in turn, begs us to ask the deeper question, WHY HASN’T NASA DONE THIS YET?!

The watermark points to a site called TOYSREVIL but we weren’t able to find the post where this Iron Man toy was featured.
