His work brought smiles to the world when smiles were needed most.
Below is a great scene from Dracula: Dead and Loving It(thanks to @bekka_black) and a masterful montage of his work over the years.
He said of his work that “I have no interest in doing anything important.” He perhaps stretched the joke by publishing an autobiography in 1993, The Naked Truth, which included comic fabrications such as two Academy Awards and an affair with Elizabeth Taylor. He actually did attract two Emmy nominations, however, but failed to win on either occasion.
Just as we tweeted earlier: ‘Director Irvin Kershner, maestro of The best Star Wars(EMPIRE STRIKES BACK) has passed. ‘
Having fought in World War II, Kershner began his career by teaching film at the University of Southern California, but quickly made the move behind the camera via a detour as a stills photographer and TV director, calling the shots on Stakeout On Dope Street in 1958.
A decent career followed, in which he directed the likes of Sean Connery in A Fine Madness, Richard Harris in The Return Of A Man Called Horse, and Faye Dunaway in 1978′s Eyes Of Laura Mars (based on John Carpenter’s screenplay).
It was this movie that persuaded George Lucas, looking for someone to take the reins on his Star Wars sequel, to approach Kershner to direct The Empire Strikes Back. The rest is movie history: Kershner’s no-frills storytelling style, coupled with a strong script and an imaginative visual pallet, gave Empire a gravitas that marked it out as an instant classic.
An interview with him at the Colorado Film School lay below.

From the Comics Alliance series Great Comics That Never Happened we get words from Chris Sims and art by friend of the site, Kevin Mellon.
The coming holiday, Thanksgiving for you none US folks, can be a stressful one. Turkeys, ham, duck or what have you are sacrificed by the millions. Entire pies are inhaled in mere minutes. Drinks are had. Drinks are had again. Family is gathered. That last part is sometimes the most stressful.
As we’ve recently discovered, sometimes that stress will build and build until you’re a poorly constructed dam on the edge of overflow because of that night’s storm of the century. Then one last faithful drop compromises your structural integrity, raging pent-up waters burst forth and you drown that once happy village at the base of the valley.
True story.
Don’t let this happen to you. Release the pressure in tight, contained bursts of screaming. Watch or, better yet, participate in the tension breaking insanity videos of “Every Arnold Scream From Every Arnold Movie” and “Nicolas Cage Losing His Shit”. Click the image to wander below the cut and wonder how you ever got through a holiday without this.
Also wonder why Cage and Schwarzenegger keep getting hired for work.
BTW, the Cage clips are far more epic than the Auhnuld clips in our not so humble opinions.

Art is invading the town of our current residence. Sculptures from around the land have been commissioned and brought to the space town of Huntsville. The sculptures from the tour, dubbed SPACES, will be located all over the community.
Created by artists from as far away as upstate New York, the pieces will be located around the Courthouse Square, outside the Huntsville Museum of Art and Von Braun Center.
Others will be on the campuses of Alabama A&M University and the University of Alabama in Huntsville, as well as Lowe Mill Arts & Entertainment on Seminole Drive.
We suppose firing up the old digital camera and wandering the streets for art sightings is in the future. Our Flickr account has been suffering for far too long now.
The following bit is obviously of interest to our tech savvy sensibilities but no set plan on how to access mobile phone or GPS information has presented itself to us. The last installation is said to be up by December 2nd and the tour will last until 2012.
We’re guessing an “app for that” will be available soon enough.
There will be docent-led walking tours, cell phone and GPS-guided tours and even a “People’s Choice Award” to see which sculpture resonates most with the public.
Beginning: Now
Ending: Fall 2012
Official site: Spaces
For more information on SPACES, contact The Arts Council at (256) 519-ARTS.
You choose.

It’s been a long while since we’ve posted on the war. It has been a conscious choice. Some observations we keep in the private notes. After reading the Yahoo article on Sal Giunta the other day, we decided this is something in which more people should be aware.
“I’m not at peace with that at all,” Giunta said. “And coming and talking about it and people wanting to shake my hand because of it, it hurts me, because it’s not what I want. And to be with so many people doing so much stuff and then to be singled out–and put forward. I mean, everyone did something.“
