Tuesday Tease: ATOMIC ROBO: LAST STOP

August 31st, 2010 No comments

Official Synopsis

Atomic Robo: Last Stop will be a fully animated extension of the already vast Atomic Robo universe. This new short film will bring fan favorite characters to life in a traditionally produced, digital animation. “While Atomic Robo: Last Stop isn’t a direct adaptation, we’ve paid very close attention to the Graphic Novels and are determined to stay as true to the subject material as humanly possible. People love Robo too much for me to try and mess with the formula,” said director Joseph W. Krzemienski.

What We Learned from the Teaser:
As teasers go, it fulfilled the duty of giving just enough to whet our animation appetites.

Why We’ll Watch the Movie:
Atomic Robo is a robot created by the power(see: knowledge) of Tesla. That’s all we really needed to know.

When’s it coming?
Soon, they say.

That Sound You Heard: Internet Nerdgasm. The Thirteenth Doctor Remake/Remodel is On.

August 31st, 2010 No comments

We were going to take time away from reposting WhiteChapel Remake/Remodel projects when Mr Ellis hit us with a theme that could not be ignored.

A Time Lord can regenerate twelve times before dying. Thirteen incarnations in all.

Design the thirteenth incarnation of the Doctor.

You may additionally redesign the DOCTOR WHO logo, the TARDIS and other elements of the property should you so wish.

So far there’s a lot of talk and no art going on. Damn we wish we could draw.

Then Master Templesmith dropped by:

By Ben Templesmith

The 13th Doctor

The good Doctor is now in a vague military type jacket with a T-shirt underneath, that ideally changes logo/style each episode, showing off something cool and British or, I don’t know, Sciency.

And he’s addicted to sucking on lollipops.

K9 is now a know-it-all cyborg Pomeranian.

This art project ends Sunday. We’re definitely keeping an eye on this one.

Found: 1970s Interview with Rod Serling. Talks Science Fiction. Inspiring.

August 31st, 2010 No comments

In the following University of Kansas professor James Gunn interviewed Rod Serling about science fiction in literature. It is incredible and inspiring to hear a creator show true humility and deference to the works of science fiction.

I think the networks have traditionally and almost ritualistically short-changed the science fiction audience both qualitatively and quantitatively. I don’t think…they’ve given the proper respect to science fiction as a legitimate area of literary attempt. Number one, I think, first of all, it’s a high level literary form and number two I think it’s much more than a small coterie of loyal viewers who’ve read Amazing Stories and want to go on.

I think it’s a sizable group, particular amongst the young. Because we live in a society which is so technologically improved and which is so scientifically orientated now that indeed this is simply a reflection of the time around us now. –Rod Serling

It is refreshing to see a creator genuinely interested in making good stories and being brutally honest about his own work. This is such a stark contrast to the bulk of creators popular today that seem to believe the sun rises and sets on their “awesome film-making abilities.”

As you’ve no doubt noticed, we’ve placed the interview above the cut and combined them into a playlist for easy viewing.

#MusicMonday: Where is My Mind Mysterious Lady

August 30th, 2010 No comments

Let’s class up this joint a bit.

The above mashes-up music from Maxence Cyrin‘s album “Novö Piano” with scenes from the Greta Garbo film The Mysterious Lady. The tune you’re hearing is “Where is My Mind” by The Pixies.

#MusicMonday: SUGIMOTO Kousuke’s Epic Music Videos “the TV show” and “Full Moon Party”

August 30th, 2010 No comments

Here are two music videos directed/made by SUGIMOTO Kousuke.

1)Take 15 suns. Bind them together and gift them to some universal goddess. The light from that piece of celestial jewelry will not outshine our love for “The TV Show.”

2)”Full Moon Party” reminds us of the Gorillaz back when the Gorillaz were still cool.

Enjoy both cuts below the jump.

The Sunday Punch: Joker and Lex

August 29th, 2010 No comments

The above is from the back pages of Superman/Batman #75. A team-up comics geeks, like us, know better as World’s Finest.

But that’s all a mere warm-up to the book’s glorious main event, Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo’s loving tribute to Calvin and Hobbes starring Lex Luthor and the Joker. I can’t begin to describe the joy this two-page gem brought me. Not only does Bermejo go completely outside his usual creative box by wonderfully paying homage to the style of Bill Watterson, but Azzarello accomplishes the equally impressive feat of mirroring Watterson’s trademark sense of humor while also staying true to the two iconic villains’ personalities and histories. I loved this strip. Absolutely loved it. For Calvin and Hobbes fans, it’s alone reason to lay down the five bucks.

Reviewer Dan Williams is not fooling. As you can see above you, those two pages are fried gold. We’re gonna run to our local shop and pick up a copy of Superman/Batman #75.
