Live-Action Mortal Kombat:Rebirth Pitch Trailer is Darker/Edgier, Features Jeri Ryan

Days ago a strange Mortal Kombat trailer surfaced causing everyone to speculate. Is it a reboot for the franchise? Is that really Jeri Ryan as Sonya Blade? Will Goro still look like a glorified sock puppet?

People were talking. A day after we viewed the gruesome Mortal Kombat: Rebirth trailer on SciFi Wire, the @WeekinRewind Twitter reported Jeri Ryan had spilled the beans on what was happening. She did this via her Twitter, of course.

“Okay, so… Mortal Kombat. It’s not a game trailer. Actually was made for the director to sell WB on his vision for a reimagined MK film,”

[…]

“I did it as a favor to a friend. No idea yet what WB’s reaction to it was. And I’m not sure how you can contact WB to push them to make it. But you guys are resourceful…! ;-)”

There you have it. A filmmaker interested in rebooting a game franchise. This time it has a graphic, gruesome, real-world angle. We’ve dropped the 7 minute short below the cut cause it’s graphic enough to be NSFW.

But is it awesome? Our jury’s still out. It’s got the action and martial arts chops. The angle they’re using to ground MK’s fantastic characters into a more realistic world is of interest to us. Guess Lord Raiden might not make the cut this go round. That is, if the people at WB are willing to pursue this reboot.

If anyone at WB is listening, Jeri Ryan as Sonya Blade instantly reserves $10 from our wallet. Michael Jai White is included in this deal.

We gotta say, it’s a damn shame what happens to Johnny Cage(martial arist Matthew Mullins) here. He actually looked badass for half a second.

Just saying.
Update:
People are talking about this sizzle reel. We’d lay great odds on this becoming reality in one way or another.

Sidenote: Whedonesque fans should note that the director for this sizzle reel, Kevin Tancharoen, is brother of Dr Horrible co-writer Maurissa Tancharoen. Talented family there.
