Stephen Hawking Believes in Alien Planet Jackers, More Doomy Dooms of Doom

April 28th, 2010 No comments

We find it curious that when scientist Albert Harrison says a visiting alien race may be as petty as humans back in January 2010, no one bats an eyelash.

Stephen Hawking says the same thing and accompanies the statement with ILM level visual effects and time on the Discovery Channel, everyone won’t shut up about humanity’s doom.

Last week our Comics column in TweetDeck exploded with video clip links to a documentary on comics creator Warren Ellis.

We can only guess that either sheer horror of anticipation or realization of dark secrets yet to be uncovered about the man prevented us from immediately posting a link to it.

A video link we shared below the jump.

Tuesday Tease: THE JONESES is Clever, Moving to Your Neighborhood… Maybe

April 27th, 2010 No comments

In the dying weeks of our favorite afternoon talk show, The Bonnie Hunt Show, David Duchovny appeared and brought with him snark and news on a movie he made. Duchovny snark is always appreciated but we had more interest in the movie he plugged.

What it is
Demi Moore constructs the all American family, moves them into an affluent suburb, and proceeds to use the family as living models to market the hell out of anything with a price tag.

What We Learned
Demi Moore can still play a by-the-numbers bitch whenever she wants. Even though we know Duchvony is more than the sum of Fox Mulder or Hank Moody, we can’t help but see those characters struggling to contain themselves inside the actor that is David Duchovny.

Why We’re Gonna Watch
David Duchovny was right, for once. This idea is pretty damn clever. Will the satire outpace the “love story” that Hollywood feels compelled to wedge into every script that blows through its doors? Who knows. We’d still like to see the flick.

Tuesday Tease: Chris Nolan Investigates Your Dreams, Releases INCEPTION Viral Video

April 27th, 2010 No comments

In the following there is talk of Lucid Dreaming with just a hint of Psy Ops. Lucid dreaming is a subject with which we have strong affection. Psy Ops, well, research into that can lead to many a nightmare.

If this viral video for Chris Nolan’s INCEPTION is any indication, he’s looking to mix the two ideas into this much debated movie.

It looks like Nolan’s mixed real scientists with actors playing scientists in order to slow-build the anticipation for INCEPTION. This move is genius. Thankfully, because it’s Chris Nolan it doesn’t come off as half-assed as the efforts of THE FOURTH KIND turned out to be.

Late Tuesday Tease: COMIC BOOK LITERACY, Using Comics to Promote Reading

April 21st, 2010 No comments

The documentary COMIC BOOK LITERACY had a showing at last weekend’s C2E2 in Chicago. This film looks to change the prevalent idea about comics in the USA by using comics as a way to promote literacy.

Just like in animation, comic books in the USA have been relegated to an Age Ghetto. The idea being if you read comics you must be addle-brained or a lazy reader. We’ve heard that countries like Japan and France don’t have the same stigma’s attached to their comic book lovers.

Back in the 80s is when Wednesday became the happiest day of the week for us. The influence of The X-Men’s resident sesquipedalian, Hank McCoy aka The Beast, is immeasurable. Fans of Chris Claremont‘s work in the 80s understands how this works.

Hopefully COMIC BOOK LITERACY will expand the US audiences perception about comics or, at the very least, help them pull the stick out.

Check out the COMIC BOOK LITERACY trailer below the jump.
